MATR® is Closing.
After 5 intense years, we are closing MATR® and have entered voluntary liquidation.
That sentence hurts.
We started MATR® in 2020 to end mattress waste. Coming out of a pandemic, we expected sustainability adoption and the economy to grow. Instead, B2B sales cycles were slow, hospitality margins got tighter, the economy stagnated and regulatory support was delayed. We tried multiple strategic paths forward. Ultimately, closing was the most responsible decision.
And yet:
🏨 We installed circular economy mattresses in 40+ pioneering hotels.
🇦🇹 We helped co-launch Austria’s Mattress Alliance.
💚 We were frequently showcased as a best-practice example of circular economy.
💰We raised funding as female founders in a conservative industry.
🤗 We gave countless hours to education, keynotes and mentoring.
We proved it’s possible.
While MATR® as a company is closing, the brand and its legacy may continue in new forms (to be determined). We hope to have more news on this soon.
And, on a personal note from Verena and Michaela: we want to say thank you to our customers, partners, investors, supporters and believers for helping us to make sleep matter. You trusted two founders who said, “Let’s rethink mattresses and waste.” That takes courage.
Change and innovation does not happen by waiting. It happens because people act, even when timing is imperfect. We acted. And we would do it all over again.
If you’re building something in the circular economy space and need support, we’re only one conversation away.
With immense gratitude,
Michaela & Verena
