Creating an urn is a gift. A gift for the family who’s loved one has passed. It’s also a gift for me as the creator. Today, I was able to personally deliver this piece to a husband, a father, a grandfather. He melted with gratitude. Trying to hold it together in front of someone he didn’t even know. When the piece was commissioned, they shared that “mom” loved shelling. I offered to incorporate some of her shells in the piece, however, her shells were lost / destroyed with all their belongings during last year’s hurricanes. When they chose this specific design, with a sanddollar, a sanddollar that my grandma collected in the 1900s, a collection that is now mine, this was my gift to honor two wonderful women who influenced the lives around them. Now that is a gift! A gift I am humbled to be able to offer. My grandma would have loved my art. And she would have adored the fact that her treasure is now part of this story.
