The government has approved a plan to distribute eco-friendly jute school bags and uniforms among primary school students in Bangladesh. The initiative is aimed at promoting the use of local jute products while reducing dependency on plastic materials. It was finalized in a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister, with several ministries involved in planning the rollout.
The programme will begin as a pilot project in selected primary schools, with around 1 lakh students expected to benefit in the first phase. Each upazila will initially include two schools in the distribution plan. The initiative is scheduled to start from July 2026 and is expected to gradually expand nationwide if successful.
