'Ambleside' | Hand-Tufted Natural Wool Runner | 65 x 173cm

These are the roads I drive and walk every day, the familiar layout of Ambleside mapped in wool underfoot. A natural Swaledale wool background that carries the town's road pattern in natural Slate Herdwick, dark and certain as tarmac, the lines curving and flowing as Lakeland roads do, shaped by the land rather than imposed upon it. Despite its subject, there is nothing literal here. The effect is quiet, abstract, entirely at home in any interior that values honest natural materials and understated design.
Monogrammed in Lichen.
It carries a faint mark within the layout, barely perceptible, which has considerably reduced this piece for sale. Natural wool, hand-tufted in Ambleside, the Lake District.

Slate Strata Birch | Hand-Tufted Herdwick Wool Rug | 93 x 192cm

Lakeland slate doesn't break cleanly. It fractures in its own language, shifting planes, unexpected angles, light caught differently on each face. Slate Strata Birch follows those fractures, its blocks of Tarn, Blea, Slate and Stone parting along fault lines of Charcoal. A pale stem of Birch stands before the composition like a tree before a crag, quiet, luminous, holding its ground. Threads of Larch and Sedge run through like the first green of spring. Natural Herdwick wool, hand-tufted in Ambleside, the Lake District.

Not Just for Humans!!
Turns out Herdwick wool has universal appeal.
This pebble rug wasn't in its new home five minutes before it got the ultimate seal of approval—claimed immediately by the resident quality control officer. Clearly passed the comfort test. Clearly passed the "is this mine now?" test too.
Dogs know good wool when they feel it. Natural, soft, warm underfoot (or underbelly). No synthetic nonsense. Just proper Lakeland fleece, hand-tufted into something worth stretching out on after a long day of... well, being a dog.
If your rug can win over the household's toughest critic, you know it's doing its job. Built for living. Built for lounging. Built to last through paws, muddy boots, and everything in between.
Rugs aren't just for humans to enjoy. They're for anyone wise enough to claim the best spot in the house.

Inspired by the raw, weathered beauty of the Coniston quarries, I titled this hand-tufted piece Slate, Strata, Copper to capture the essence of that landscape. The design is a direct reflection of the region’s ancient geology, the deep, layered bands of slate representing centuries of compressed time, punctuated by the fractured, metallic veins of copper that once drew miners deep into the earth. Working with the tufting gun, I aimed to translate the rugged tactility of the rock face into something soft underfoot, using texture to mimic the sharp breaks in the stone and the smooth, rich lines of mineral deposits. I originally created this rug for an exhibition, thrilled to say it sold and found its forever home. It’s been wonderful knowing a piece inspired by such dramatic industrial heritage now brings warmth and texture to a new space.

From Stone to Rug:
A Yorkshire Commission Story
Sometimes a commission begins with something unexpected, in this case it was a stone.
Debbie and Christine drove up from Leeds to the workshop carrying a piece of local stone that had caught their eye. They loved its layers, its subtle shifts in colour, the way geology tells a story through texture and tone. Could I translate that into a rug for their dining room?
My partner polished the cleaved surface to help clarify the colours hidden within, those beautiful rust and blue tones, the neutral greys and earths. We laid out yarn samples, pulled colours found in their fireplace tiles, worked out the exact proportions for the space in front of their sofa.
What struck me most about Debbie and Christine was their energy, nothing phases them. Rain? Perfect day for a walk. Long drive to collect a rug? An excuse for a Lakes adventure. They approached the whole commission process with that same joyful determination.
The result is 'Slate, Strata, Copper' - 150cm x 96cm hand-tufted in Herdwick wool that captures those geological layers they loved in the original stone. The colours work perfectly with their newly restored fire, the oak floors, the light in their Yorkshire dining room.
They've already had friends asking for my details after seeing it. There's something about a piece that's been collaboratively designed, carefully considered, made specifically for a space - it draws people in. They can feel the intention behind it.
This is what bespoke work offers: not just a rug, but a story. From stone to sketch to tufted textile. From workshop conversation to finished piece settled in its forever home. ❤️
