Tomorrow, Saturday the 25th we open our Winter Curation at the gallery. This will be the first group show since we have done some refurbishments at the gallery. And it seems to be working. We used to have a very broad staircase leading to the basement, which the previous owner, the late Peter Visser, or possibly somebody before him installed. The structure and its railings took up quite a bit of space. It made sense for them because they used the basement as another exhibition space. But we use it as an office and for art storage. What I did was to collapse that staircase and replace it with two openable doors in the floor. This way one can still lower large works into the storage area, and then close it to create one large open room with nothing interrupting one's view of the art on any of the walls. We now enter the basement by way of the original late-Victorian stairs which I opened up again. It is placed next to the spiral stairwell (which I would never change for anything)
POP IN IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA OR VISIT US SPECIFICALLY. We open the WInter show at 11 am. Everybody's welcome.

Find yourself in Church Street between Loop and Burg Streets, also known as the Art ‘Node’ where you will find a variety of art galleries and antique stores, including 99Loop, Smac, Nel, Worldart, Eclectica Contemporary, the Cape Gallery and of course the Association for the Visual Arts and its gallery. In between all of these, you find the Church Street Collectables market where you will be presented with antique collectables, crafts, jewellery, eyewear and clothes. This little market street is the best little market in Cape Town.
Bev, on the Long Street side, sells objects of high quality, from old, but never used movie cameras to rings dating from all periods, Victorian to the wild 60s. Here you will find yourself gifting yourself.
The next stall is Bülent’s and he never disappoints with all manner of collectable and often exotic objects. Ask and he will surprise you.
Adjacent we have Ferrari who will fulfil all your wildlife needs. He specialises in meerkats, sharks, lions, woodpeckers and rhinos. These animals are skillfully crafted to a high degree. They are in wood and plate metal. These make exquisite gifts for a generous host.
If you want the latest in eyewear and some fresh bling for your hands and arms, go no further than Lulu’s stall. She has the right gear for any time of day.
On the Burg Street side, you will find the most delightful array of vintage and contemporary clothes. Let Lola show you how to dress for any decade, then or now.

One week left to see Philip Steele's major solo exhibition - Each man kills the thing he loves, at Nel Gallery, 117 Long Street corner of Church Street. In this hauntingly beautiful exhibition of portraits, the artist beatifies his subjects (the first process in the journey to sainthood) He painted over a hundred portraits of deceased gay erotic stars from the last half of the 20th and early part of the 21st centuries. Commemorating and handing them dignity in this memorial which they lacked in their lived experience as being marginalised, existing in that shadow world that is the desires and fantasies of gay men. Their lived experiences within society attest to prejudice, discrimination, which ultimately lead to their deaths. The average life expectancy of these stars, in relation to their mainstream counterparts, is only 33.
