spaZa Store Welcome to spaZa! 🌟 We're a South African lifestyle company crafting functional eco-friendly handmade items that feel good to use and share as gifts. ✨

Spaza's non-disposable biodegradable products are designed with careful consideration for the natural, sustainable, raw materials that are locally available. A Spaza shop is an informal shop selling everyday household items, run from home in South African townships. The production of Spaza's functional hand-made products creates home-based employment for South African women.

Ironer Berenice has been with us since the early days of our Fair Trade workshop in Mitchells Plain. “I like working with people,” she says, describing a team that feels like family. What began with two women sewing from Anne-Marie’s living room has grown into a thriving workshop employing 12 women from the local community.

Inspired by the beauty of the Cape Floral Kingdom

The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest yet richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms, spanning roughly 90,000 km² across South Africa’s Western and Eastern Capes. It contains over 9,000 plant species!
Our individually hand carved stamps are inspired by the beauty that surrounds us in Cape Town.

On a recent visit, founder Julia Schaffer sat down with Anne-Marie. After years working in South Africa’s fashion industry, Julia saw how much time women were spending travelling to and from work, leaving little time for their families. Together, they built a different model: creating dignified, fairly paid work within the local community.
