Tambourine / Cape Town / 2025

Set within a former church parsonage dating back to the early 20th century, this restaurant occupies a building that has continuously adapted - from parsonage to creamery, and now a contemporary dining room for small plates and shared tables.

The project is conceived as a quiet collaboration: architecture, art and light working together to create a space shaped by layers of authorship rather than a singular, resolved gesture. A ceiling-mounted light sculpture by Ralph Borland anchors the room, while Marti Macfly’s facade work and custom light fittings by Greg Marshall contribute to an atmosphere that feels lived-in, familiar and social.

Designed to attract a younger, informal dining crowd, the interior resists overt nostalgia, allowing material restraint, use and time to definite the character of the space.

A few moments from the journey of Beulah as we count down to handover.

One of our favourite details is the kitchen window, designed to frame an existing tree​ and the occasional glimse of the Table Mountain Cableway in the distance. From raw plaster to the final installation, it has become a quiet anchor point in the home.

Another detail coming to life is the curved dining room ​n​iche. Early ​p​laster, numerous red paint samples, test after test…. And, finally, the satisfying moment of seeing the painter lay down those confident strokes.

A small sequence that captures what we love most about architecture: patience, iteration, and the joy of watching ideas materialise.

Meet Tali Rayner, one of the architects at Hours Clear.

Tali graduated cm laude with a Master’s in Architecture from UCT, where she received the UCT Class Medal along with the Corobrik, CIFA and SAIA awards for top student and best postgraduate work.

With over a decade of experience in the built environment — both locally and abroad — Tali brings a thoughtful and refined approach to every project. She’s a meticulous planner, a deeply considered designer, and exceptionally quick when it comes to translating ideas into drawings.

Her work is grounded in the simplicity of modernism, the strength of brutalism and the authenticity of natural materials — always seeking balance between clean lines, robust structures and a connection to the landscape.

We’re lucky to have her thoughtful design voice shaping the work we do.

Constantia transformation

Nestled in the leafy heart of Constantia, this Cape Dutch-style home is going through a transformation.

We’re re-aligning its central axis, opening up to a sunny pool courtyard - the anchor to the home’s layout and the perfect place to soak in the forest surround.

To bring the home to a more human scale, we’re removing some of the large roof structures, introducing a flat roof element, and demolishing a substantial portion of the existing building. The imposing thatch roof is making way for a refined Victorian profile.

The structure is emerging - rebar, formwork, and a precision-cast drip joint along the slab edge. Shaped steel columns stand prominently, soon to support a dramatic roofline.

From this height, the view of Table Mountain dominates — a constant backdrop as we build.
Designed by , with design development by our studio. The owner is building the house themselves, and the concrete work is in the hands of Hein Visagie - known for some of the best concrete work in Cape Town.
