Wynberg Boys classrooms, finished.

Natural anodised aluminium openers throughout, replacing the old aluminium units that had done decades of service. Better ventilation, better seals, and windows the boys and staff can open without a fight.

Second half of the brief we started in the foyer earlier in the year. A school established in 1841, still being looked after.

If your school, estate or commercial building has windows on their last legs, come and talk to us before they fail. Easier to plan than to react.

On site at Wynberg Boys again, this time in the classrooms.

Old aluminium frames coming out, new natural anodised aluminium top-hung openers going in. Sashes stacked outside, dust sheets down, one classroom at a time so the school could keep running around us.

Same brief as the foyer job earlier in the year: keep what still works, replace what's done.

Reveal to follow this weekend.

Tokai job for Alan Dawson. The old timber had gone soft in the sills and the beading wouldn't hold putty any more. A repair would have bought a season at best, so we replaced the lot.

Black aluminium with colonial bars, same proportions as the original. Aluminium won't warp or rot, the seals do proper work against Cape winter weather, and the colonial bars keep the character rather than flattening it into a plain modern window.

Timber is worth restoring when the frames are still sound. When they aren't, this is usually the call.

FAQ: does aluminium rust at the coast? Not exactly, aluminium doesn't rust the way steel does, but it can corrode if the spec's been cut somewhere along the way.

Three things that actually make the difference. A proper marine-grade powder coat is the first line of defence against salt air, skip it and the surface starts pitting within a couple of seasons. The grade matters too, 6063-T6 architectural aluminium is what should be going into coastal jobs, not a cheaper alternative that costs less up front and more later. And a simple hose-down every few weeks clears the salt residue before it does any damage, the same idea as rinsing your car after a beach day.

Get those three right and coastal aluminium holds up for decades. Skip them and you're looking at a much shorter lifespan.

Not sure what your project needs? That's what we're here for.

Skylight repair, Cape Town. Cracked pane replaced with laminated safety glass.

Overhead glazing gets laminated as standard here, not toughened. If a skylight ever breaks, you want the pieces held together by the interlayer rather than coming down on whoever's underneath. Same logic as a windscreen.

The shot looking straight up through it from inside is honestly the best angle on this one. Natural light doing exactly what it's meant to.

Same doors, same frames. We took out what was in the middle of them.

The dividing mullions were original, and they were doing what glazing bars do: chopping the view into pieces and making the room read smaller than it is.

So the bars came out and a single full pane of safety glass went in. New beading to suit, because the old beading was cut for the divided panes and won’t hold a single sheet properly.

Worth saying: the frames are untouched. You keep the timber and keep the proportions. You just stop looking at the garden through lattice.

Safely glass isn’t optional on a change like this, either. One big pane at door height takes a lot more impact than six small ones did.

Worth thinking about early if you're planning a staircase: the balustrade decides how big the room feels.

A solid balustrade does the safety job perfectly well. It also cuts the space in half visually and blocks whatever light was coming down the stairwell, which matters a lot in an open-plan ground floor where the stairs sit in the middle of everything.

Glass does the same job and keeps the sightline. This one is side-mounted toughened glass fixed into the stringer, so there's no top rail and no posts breaking up the run. The LED strip under the treads only reads the way it does because there's nothing standing in front of it.

One part of this isn't a style decision. Toughened glass is not optional on a balustrade. It is a barrier holding people back, often at height, so the glass has to be rated for it and so do the fixings. If anyone quotes you standard float glass for a balustrade, that is the moment to ask questions.

If you're at the stage of choosing a staircase, this is a cheaper decision to make now than to revisit later.
