Most warehouse lighting briefs start and end with one number: lux on the floor.
It's the easiest thing to specify, and the easiest thing to get wrong.
Floor lux tells you whether someone can see where they're walking. It tells you almost nothing about whether they can read a label on the third shelf of racking, spot a forklift approaching from a cross-aisle, or see a hazard at height. That's vertical illuminance — light hitting upright surfaces, not the floor — and it's the measurement most warehouse jobs skip entirely.
On a project we're currently finishing, in a space with no lighting installed previously:
💡 Suspended e-batten fixtures, 40° optics
💡 4000K, non-dimmed
💡 Specified for high efficiency over flexibility the space didn't need
💡 Passage readings above 200 lux
💡 Vertical illuminance holding up properly too — not just the floor
That second number is the one that actually changes how a warehouse feels to work in: racking faces visible, signage legible, no dead zones the moment you turn to face a shelf instead of the aisle.
A few other things that matter more than most specs account for:
💡 Uniformity, so one aisle isn't lit brilliantly while the next sits in shadow
💡 Fixture rating suited to the actual environment — dust, height, vibration, cold storage if relevant
💡 Mounting height matched to aisle width, not just ceiling height
Good warehouse lighting is a calculation, not a fixture swap.
