An east-facing kitchen, so the morning sun hits hardest right when everyone is making breakfast.

We fitted light-filter roller blinds across these windows. They take the edge off the glare and give privacy, and the kitchen still gets its natural light.

Simple and clean, and they all but disappear when they're up.

Watch the light on these sheers.

The sun comes through the pergola outside and lands on them in soft patterns, and it moves all afternoon. You can't put that in a quote, but it's the first thing you notice in the room.

The curtains hang from a lit recess in the ceiling, so the folds run unbroken to the floor and stack back neatly beside the glass. The side window takes a Roman blind in the same palette.

A question we hear in almost every living room: how do I keep the view and still lose the glare?

Sheers. Floor-length, in soft even folds from the track to the floor. They filter the light without closing the room off.

On the patio doors past the fireplace, a roller blind does the heavier work when the sun comes round, and tucks away under the timber beams when it isn't needed.

Bathrooms are the hardest room to dress.

Steam, privacy, and you still want the light. In this one we used two different treatments and kept them in one calm palette.

The frosted window got white Altra shutters with a divider rail across each panel, so the louvres can sit open to the light. The second window took a Roman blind in a soft stone tone, fitted inside the recess.

Against the marble, the copper taps and that wallpaper, anything louder would have fought the room.

Why fit a Roman blind that never moves?

Because a bedroom needs two things: something soft to look at, and something that makes the room properly dark.

So the Roman sits fixed at the top of each window as a dressing. Nobody pulls it, so the folds stay perfect. Behind it, a motorised blockout roller does the daily work, from full daylight to a dark room at the press of a button.

It's one of our favourite pairings for a bedroom.

Floor-length curtains on a black rod, framing a pair of arched French doors.

The rod sits high, above the fanlight, so the arch stays clear and the panels stack back beside the frame. The balcony and the mountain view stay open to the room.
