Alistair Wilson started off in the catering industry over 20 years ago planning and installing pop-up hospitality events, long before they became hip and trendy. Faced with obstacles and locations most would shy away from, he met each challenge head on and achieved the impossible for his clients. From here he moved to into the hotel industry where he made a name for himself in some of Cape Town’s finest five star establishments. Several years later he made the big leap to London, where he further developed his operational skill-set consulting for several high end cocktail bars. Upon his return to Cape Town, Alistair was recruited to set up The Tank in de Waterkant; a restaurant-meets-cocktail bar that was, at its height, one of Cape Town’s best known establishments. Upon completion, he moved to The Planet Bar, at the Mount Nelson, where he managed to take it from a regular hotel bar to one of the city’s favourite watering holes. His passion and experience have led him, over the years, to consult on an ad-hoc basis for friends and fellow restaurateurs in areas such as ergonomic setup, menu planning, staff training, service delivery, operational issues and day to day running of an establishment. It was only natural then that seven years ago he opened his own restaurant, La Bottega in Woodstock. Today, while he still deals with the day to day challenges of running and marketing a restaurant in Cape Town, he taken his expertise and love for the hospitality industry and along with interior decorator and space planner, Camilla Wilson, has created Wilson & Wilson. Interior decorator and space planner, Camila Wilson began her career in interiors when she spent time in London working for one of the leading interior designers of today, Justin van Breda. That was over ten years ago. Since then she has run her own interior decorating business where she specialises in providing interior solutions that are functional and stylish. Her ability to project manage within budget and on time is the result of many years working on film productions, where she also acquired a talent for styling sets. Camilla has an instinctive understanding of spatial planning and what is required both practically and aesthetically from a space, she also has a very good understanding of colours and patterns, and how to use them in conjunction with texture to create a natural layered look. A huge part of Camilla’s business hinges on original solutions, and as such much of her time is spent hunting for that perfect item, that piece de resistance, icing on the cake. As such she can be seen trawling the market places and back alley junk shops looking for special pieces and inspiration. She has also designed a variety of bespoke pieces for clients that include retro desks, dining chairs, lighting installations, bookshelves and artwork. One day in March 2015 Camilla and Alistair found themselves sitting at La Bottega discussing a revamp. The restaurant was undergoing a huge restructure and with it opportunity to create a fresh look. With Alistair’s understanding of the needs of his business and best use of space in terms of the daily routines of the business and Camilla’s eye for design and styling the two collaborated on this project. Upon completing it they realised that there was a natural synergy between their skill sets and that the operations and daily running of a restaurant, coffee shop or bar and the look, feel and design of that space have to work hand in hand. And so it was that Wilson & Wilson was born.
