Curiosity is critical to human survival and growth. Curious people are known to ask a large number of unprompted questions, read deeply, examine interesting images, manipulate interesting objects, investigate how other people think, feel, and behave, take risks to acquire new experiences, and persist on challenging tasks.

Curiosity can be commonly defined as the recognition, pursuit, and desire to explore novel, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous events. There is the feeling of interest in a situation where a potential exists for learning. There is a desire to seek out novel experiences - to see what happens.

My art teacher used to say that if you want to understand the symbolic meaning of an artwork, you start to imagine removing the elements that make up the artwork to truly understand why they are there.

What is the true essence and purpose of the piece with and without those components?

Over the years, I've found this same principle to be profoundly applicable to the art of interior design. Just as stripping away elements in a work of art can unveil its deeper significance, removing the individual components of a space allows me to connect with its fundamental purpose and meaning.

Now, 16 years after first learning this lesson from my teacher, I employ this methodical, introspective approach in every project I undertake. I begin by designing a space on paper, carefully crafting each element. But then comes the crucial step - I remove every single component and question whether it truly contributes to the overall experience and essence of the room.

Does this furnishing enhance the sensorial journey, or is it merely superfluous? Does this lighting fixture serve a functional need, or is it simply an aesthetic indulgence? By stripping away the nonessential, I'm able to distill each space down to its purest form - revealing the core reasons and values that should guide the design.

This process of continuous refinement and distillation is, to me, the heart of intentional, soulful design. It's about cultivating spaces that speak to the innermost needs and desires of the human spirit, rather than dazzling with surface-level opulence.

It's in the process of simplification that we often uncover the greatest beauty, meaning and resonance within a space.

It can be easy to feel discouraged when our creative visions don't materialize as quickly as we'd like, especially in a world that is constantly trying to sell us the myth of overnight success.

But the truth is, truly breathtaking works of art and design are rarely the result of a neat, linear process. They're born from the messy, non-linear journey of creative exploration.

The "messy middle" of a creative project is where the real magic happens. It's where our self-doubt, limiting beliefs and our deepest fears get dragged into the light, kicking and screaming.

It's at this moment when we have to develop the patience, persistence, and resilience to keep going even when the path forward isn't clear.

It's easy to look at a finished painting or a stunning interior and marvel at the artist or designer's talent. But the real transformation happens in the day-to-day grind, the small victories, and the deep inner work required to get there.

So the next time you find yourself getting impatient, take a deep breath, remember the power of patience, and keep moving forward one small step at a time. The results may surprise you.

If there's one thing we tend to avoid at all costs, it's discomfort.

We structure our lives to minimize pain, struggle, and anything that rocks the boat of our carefully curated comfort zones. But I learned that discomfort is actually a gift in disguise...

Discomfort is often a signpost pointing us toward our greatest growth and transformation. It's in those moments of unease, uncertainty, and challenge that we're asked to evolve, to expand, to become more of who we're meant to be.

Instead of reflexively trying to make the discomfort go away, can you lean into it, get curious about it? What is this discomfort trying to teach you? What limiting beliefs or old patterns is it unearthing, giving you a chance to release? What new horizons is it beckoning you toward?

When we stop running from discomfort and instead welcome it as a catalyst for change, we open ourselves up to profound breakthroughs. The very things that once felt daunting can become the stepping stones to our greatest triumphs. So the next time discomfort comes knocking, consider it an invitation to become more of who you're meant to be. The rewards on the other side are well worth the temporary unease.

Our physical environments have a profound subconscious impact on our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

Open, harmonious, and aesthetically pleasing surroundings have been linked to enhanced mood, cognitive performance, and overall life satisfaction.

Whereas, cramped, disorganized, or impersonal spaces can induce stress, anxiety, and even physical symptoms like headaches or muscle tension.

When we consciously design our living and working environments, we're essentially setting ourselves up for greater happiness and well-being.

The way we experience light in our living spaces can have a profound impact on our mood, energy, and overall sense of wellbeing.

Lighting is not merely a functional element, but a powerful tool for cultivating mindful, restorative environments.

By carefully curating the colour temperature, quality, intensity, and direction of light, we create spaces that nourish the senses and uplift the spirit.

Imagination is the wellspring of our most profound experiences. It's the bridge that connects the tangible and the intangible, the visible and the invisible. It's the driving force behind our ability to transcend the boundaries of the present and envision a future filled with possibility.

When we dare to imagine the world anew, we open ourselves to fresh perspectives, innovative solutions, and transformative experiences.

By intentionally designing spaces that spark the imagination, we invite you to embark on a journey of endless possibilities...
