The man captaining the International team this week helped rebuild the course they're playing on.

Geoff Ogilvy's firm OCM rebuilt Medinah No. 3 in 2023 and 2024. Before that, Justin Thomas won the 2019 BMW here at 25 under with a 61 on the Saturday. Golf Digest called that week the coup de grace and said the club then realised dramatic changes were needed.

The South African bit is Gary Player. He won the 1988 US Senior Open here, beating Bob Charles in an 18-hole playoff.

Presidents Cup, 24 to 27 September.

The DP World Tour is at The Belfry this week for the Husqvarna British Masters, 27 to 30 August, hosted by Sir Nick Faldo.

It is played on the Brabazon, and no course anywhere has staged more Ryder Cups. Four of them, in 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2002. Nowhere else has managed more than two. Dave Thomas and Peter Alliss built it on Warwickshire farmland and opened it in 1977.

The 10th is the hole people remember, a par 4 of just over 300 yards with water down the whole left side, daring you to have a go at the green. The South African line is a name most have forgotten: Hugh Baiocchi won the 1983 State Express Classic here.

We create any course in the world, from the Brabazon to your home track. Full Colour Series from R1 695.

Steenberg Golf Club ⛳

📍 Tokai, Cape Town
⛳ Par 72 · 5,844 metres
🎨 Peter Matkovich · 1996
🌱 Bent grass greens, kikuyu fairways

Under 5,900 metres, and still one of the courses people talk about most in the Cape. Matkovich routed it through the old Steenberg farm with the Constantiaberg standing over the back nine.

Short by modern numbers, which is the point. Position matters more than distance here.

Print available in Blue, Green and Grey, framed or unframed.

Bryanston Country Club.

📍 Johannesburg, South Africa
⛳ Par 72 · 6,690 metres
🎨 Charles H Alison · 1951
🌱 Kikuyu fairways & tees, bent grass greens

Alison is one of the more serious names in golf architecture to have worked in South Africa. He was a partner of Harry C**t, and the man behind a string of courses in Japan and the United States. Bryanston opened in 1951.

It's a proper parkland course in the middle of the suburbs: tree-lined, quiet, and a lot more subtle than its length suggests. The Krom wetland runs through the property.

Print available in Blue, Green and Grey, framed or unframed.

Pinnacle Point 🌊

📍 Mossel Bay, Western Cape
⛳ Par 72 · 5,805 metres
🎨 Peter Matkovich · 2006
🌱 Bent grass greens

Cliff-top golf on the Indian Ocean. Several holes play along the edge itself, and the 13th is the one everyone photographs: a short par 3 with the ocean sitting between the tees and the green.

At 5,805 metres it's not long. The wind off the water does most of the defending.

Print available in Blue, Green and Grey, framed or unframed.
