LAMINATE VS. CARPET

The popularity & benefits of laminate over other types of home flooring are affordability, ease of installation & low maintenance.

💵 Laminate’s cheap as it’s a largely synthetic flooring that’s easily mass produced.
🛠️ It’s easy to install as most types uses click & lock assembly, meaning no nails or glue PLUS you can float it over most existing sub floors.
🧤 Finally, it’s easy to clean & care for because of thick & clear wear layers that cover the surface.

So why not just use laminate floor throughout? Good question!

There is a vast variety of mid-range, similarly priced options for both. As high-quality carpet prices grow, you can save money on laminate - if you intend to install it yourself. Carpet, on the other hand really needs professional installation, so cost needs to be factored in here.

Laminate is a harder, more resilient surface & so will last longer BUT only if you purchase a decent product & maintain it. Where foot traffic is low carpet is a more long-term investment.
For a family environment carpet is much more forgiving, warm & comfy… but can be a nightmare to clean.
Laminate on the other hand can stand up better to claws & rough play. Thee number one advantage that laminate has is ease of cleaning & keeping clean.

The biggest difference here is installation.
Laminate installation is easy compared to the prep, skill & time required for tiles. If you can afford the installation costs then tiles make sense.

Durability and longevity-wise, tile wins hands down, especially in wet conditions i.e. in kitchens & bathrooms.
So, if you have excess water/moisture in your home then tile is a much better choice.

2 words here: style & price! Due to exceptional products & varieties available, laminates look great, but just doesn’t look the same as solid hardwood, fact. In a dining room or master bedroom where style matters, you might consider spending a little more on quality.

Alternatively, laminate flooring is practical & functional.
In heavy traffic areas (kids, pets etc.) laminate flooring just makes sense. It’s robust, still attractive & cleans easily too.
So solid wood flooring seems impractical & expensive.
