I posted recently about spotting these trout belly bits at Woolies Kyalami Corner.
Great pricing, but wasn’t sure what they’d be like …
Each long strip had NO bones, other than one fin, which was quite easy to snip out once I had done one or two.
So that did take ten minutes 🙄.
But I am sure the mongoose that visits my garden was thrilled with what he found hidden in the bottom flowerbed 😜.
I marinated the strips in a bit of Woolies poke sauce for 10 minutes before cooking, which gave a lovely sweet-saltiness.
Decided to braai them on the solid Weber pan, for a grilled flavour.
Gloriously fatty … we are supposed to be eating more oily fish hey?!
Should not have used ANY avo oil when I cooked them!
Started them skin side down, and since they were thin strips they literally needed 30-60 seconds a side!
Straight off the grid they were crispy and divine!
Would have just been enough for 2 substantial or maybe 3 small poke bowls.
For R26!!
Worth the cutting.
Definitely buying these again!
Thanks Woolies for not wasting these belly strips.

I usually trust the All Gold brand.
But this braai relish was just AWFUL!
Gloopy and tasteless.
I had to doctor it with smoked paprika, herb salt, garlic powder and onion chili crunch just to make it edible.
Never buying this again!
Anyone found a decent tinned braaisous for when you have no time to make your own?
Kitchen Sanity rating 0/5.

One of the most delicious wraps I have ever made, concocted out of fridge leftovers!
Base was a sourdough wrap.
Smeared with the last of my Boursin.
Sliced leftover rare grilled ostrich fillet (tender as butter).
Sauteed red onion and giant black mushroom slices.
Grated parmesan.
Sadly had no rocket.
Rolled up and warmed one minute a side on a dry pan until golden.
Went beautifully with a good red wine.

New at Woolies!
Giant single cloves of garlic.
Big and juicy.
I simply thinly sliced the first clove I used, and the smell of the sliced garlic on the chopping board was just wonderful, quite different to other garlic.
Cute little basket for pantry storage.
Might try roasting a few!
However, do NOT agree about easy-to-peel!!
Let me know if you discover an easy peeling method please!
My usual bang-the-clove method, just broke the clove in half, without releasing the tight skin at all.

Chicken tagine for Sunday lunch.
Used a whole jar of Woolies Belazu tagine paste for 8 skiness thighs & drumsticks.
Four Uptodate potatoes, two red onions, and one big clove of garlic.
Near the end, added petit pois peas, chopped coriander and halved mini rosa for some colour.
But blanched fine french beans would have been good.
Thought it would be too spicy, but mild - could have been eaten by a chili-averse.
We added baby spinach leaves and Skote Petoors chili oil at the table.
Went beautifully with Honeybunch Chenin from Remhoogte (thanks N!).
I thought we would need a few slices of ciabatta to scarpetta all the lovely gravy, but the baby spinach and potato seemed to absorb it all!
Only three of us eating this, but not much left!
Just enough left for two of us to have for supper later this week, on a puff paratha with dollops of coriander yoghurt.

Bad photo sorry!
So excited to see fresh lasagne sheets on the shelves at Woolies Kyalami Corner last week.
No I will NOT be making conventional lasagne.
Far too much work, and too rich for me 🤪.
I would rather make an open lasagne, using two sheets per person and perhaps some roasted butternut, feta, crispy sage and pinenuts in between the layers, drizzled with a sage butter sauce.
Or perhaps a cheats version, with a sachet of Woolies creamy chicken and mushroom in between the layers.
Or an easy-to-eat stracchi di pasta, where you roughly tear the fresh lasagne sheets and cook them in a good ragu.
