Story time… because this drawing didn’t start with one perfect photo. πŸ˜‰βœ¨

One of my existing clients was away for the weekend and happened to show someone a few of the drawings I've done for her. Next thing I know, she's messaging me on this lady's behalf because Tannie wanted one too. 😊

She wanted a drawing of herself, her granddaughter and her husband (Oom), but the challenge was that they didn't actually have a photo of all three of them together. Tannie said it’s so difficult to get everyone together, looking at the camera at the same time - I’m sure a lot of us can relate. 🀭

So she asked if it's possible to combine separate photos into one drawing.

This is actually one of the unexpected bonuses of my style. πŸ˜„

Since I don't draw detailed facial features anyway (just the outline of the eyes/eyebrows), I often work from separate photos and bring everyone together into one drawing. It does depend on the photos themselves, but when it works, it's a great option for those moments where getting that perfect family photo just isn't possible.

So that's exactly what we did, created a picture of Tannie, her granddaughter and Oom together! πŸ’ƒπŸ»

I recently got the feedback that Tannie absolutely loved her drawing, and she has already said she'll definitely be ordering again in the future. πŸ™ŒπŸ»

And to my existing clients... thank you. Every time you show someone your drawing, share my work, recommend me, or mention my name in a room I'm not in, it genuinely means so much.πŸ™πŸ»

So tell your auntie, your granny, your grandpa, your uncle, your best friend, your work colleague, whoever comes to mind. I appreciate every recommendation more than you know. 🩷

This portrait was a little different. ✨

I've created quite a few pieces for this family over the years, and this time it was in honour of their beautiful boy, Boetie.🐢🌈

While we were chatting about how they wanted to display the portrait, the idea came up to incorporate his collar into the piece. It was the first time I'd tried something like this, and I'm so grateful they trusted me enough to let me figure it out as I went. It's one of the things I love most about what I do, every now and then a client brings an idea that pushes me to learn something new.

When Boetie's collar arrived, it still had his little floofs on it. If you've ever lost a pet, you'll know just how precious something like that becomes. To be trusted with something that carries so much love and so many memories is something I don't take lightly. πŸ₯Ή

Boetie's dad is now building a custom frame to display the portrait and his collar together, which makes this piece feel like such a special collaboration from start to finish. I feel incredibly honoured to have played a small part in creating something that will keep his memory close. 🀍

The artwork featured in this post is from last year's Colour for Change initiative I did for the kiddies in Leonsdale with Thandanani NPO. It remains a beautiful reminder that creativity and kindness can come together to make a difference. ✨

This year I won't be organising an initiative of my own, but I'll still be supporting where I can, in my own way. Sometimes our contribution looks different, and that's okay.

If you'd like a copy of the Mandela colouring page for yourself, your children, or your classroom, send me a message and I'll happily share the printable. 🫢🏼

Over the next few days, keep an eye on my stories and reposts, where I'll be sharing some of my favourite Mandela Day initiatives from people and organisations doing incredible work. If one resonates with you, I hope you'll consider supporting it in whatever way you can.

If you're involved in a Mandela Day initiative, or know of one that deserves a little more visibility, tag me or send it my way I'd be happy to help spread the word. πŸ’›
