When two quotes for the same window look very different, the difference is rarely the fabric. It is everything the quote does not say.

Five questions worth asking any supplier, including us.

1. Who measures, and are they the same people who install?
2. What are the chains and components made of?
3. How long is the warranty, and what does it actually cover?
4. If something is wrong, is the blind repaired or remade?
5. What is the lead time, and what happens if you need it sooner?

Every South African has seen it. Many have lived it.

On most projects, window treatments are chosen once the painting is done. By then, some of the best options have quietly been ruled out.

Planning a recess fit? The frame depth needed checking before the frames went in. Want the blind to sit flush with the ceiling line? That is a bulkhead or pelmet conversation. Any chance of motorisation? A power point at the right window now saves chasing plaster later.

Blinds are installed last. They should not be decided last.

Salt air. Humidity that never quite leaves. Sun bouncing off the water and coming through the glass twice as hard. A coastal home asks more of its windows than almost anywhere else.

Here is how we would approach it.

Bathrooms: plaswood venetians, built for sustained moisture.
Sea-facing lounge: screen fabric, to keep the view and cut the glare off the water.

Bedrooms: blockout, because summer sunrise at the coast arrives early.

Every home has one. The window that is perfectly pleasant until mid-afternoon, then turns the room into the hottest, brightest place in the house until the sun goes down.

Three things help.

One: lower the blind before the sun reaches the glass, not after. Heat that is already in the room stays in the room.

Two: screen fabric keeps the view while cutting glare and UV. Darker screen colours give a clearer view out. Lighter colours reflect more heat.

Three: if it is a bedroom or TV room, blockout is the honest answer. Screen fabric reduces the sun. Blockout ends the conversation.

Very few windows are perfectly square. Walls settle. Frames shift. Plaster is thicker in one corner than the other.

Measure the width once, say at the top, and you have measured one point on a shape that is rarely the same size all the way down. A few millimetres is enough for a recess blind to catch on one side and leave a gap on the other.

The fix: measure the width at the top, middle and bottom. Measure the height on the left, centre and right. For a recess fit, the smallest number wins.

For a few weeks every October, the Highveld turns purple. And for most of those weeks, the view is happening on the other side of a window.

The blind decides how much of it you get. A roller raised fully leaves nothing but a slim line at the top of the frame, with nothing between you and the canopy. Screen fabric keeps the view intact through the heat of the afternoon, while cutting glare and UV.

The jacarandas are only here briefly. The frame should be worth looking through.

The brief was simple: complete darkness at 6am and full light when we choose to raise the blind.

Blockout roller, face-fixed above the frame, colour-matched to the ceiling. The brackets concealed. The chain falling on the left side because of where the bed sits.
