One of the risks contractors need to take seriously is having insufficient PPE or unclear safety procedures on site.

It can be easy to focus on getting the work done and assume that experienced workers know what to do. But every site has its own hazards, and every task can carry different risks.

Contractors should make sure that:

• The right PPE is available for the work being carried out
• Workers know when and how it needs to be used
• Site-specific hazards are identified before work starts
• Safety procedures are clearly communicated to everyone on site
• Supervisors make sure procedures are actually being followed

PPE is also only one part of site safety. It doesn't replace proper planning, training, supervision and safe working procedures.

Taking shortcuts with safety can have serious consequences for workers, the project and the business.

We work with contractors across the construction industry, supplying specialised materials, coatings, tools and equipment. We share information like this because good contractors don't just focus on getting the job finished. They focus on getting it done properly and safely.

Yes, December is probably not on your mind in a big way right now, but maybe it should be.

In construction, year-end comes with unique pressures. Many clients want projects completed before December shutdowns, and the businesses that prepare early are the ones who deliver on time and protect their reputation.

Why this matters for contractors:

• Planning ahead avoids last-minute pressure. Project timelines get squeezed toward the end of the year, and without forward planning, it’s easy to run into delays.

• Clients notice when you think ahead. It positions you as a professional who understands their needs and manages expectations clearly.

• Being “ready to go” wins work. Even if your clients aren’t ready to move forward now, having systems in place means you can hit the ground running the moment they are.

At Dr Concrete, we’ve seen how contractors who prepare for the December rush not only complete projects on time, but also strengthen their client relationships and set themselves apart in a competitive market.

Our advice: Start looking at your pipeline now. Which projects might push to finish before December? What materials and equipment will you need to avoid downtime? And where can you prepare systems so you’re not caught off guard?

We supply building materials and equipment every day, but more importantly, we care about helping our customers succeed. Planning now is one of the simplest ways to do better business.

“It looked perfect when we left.”

Then the client calls a few months later and asks why the beautiful epoxy floor is starting to look yellow or amber.

One thing contractors need to consider when specifying epoxy is UV exposure.

Many epoxy systems can yellow or amber when exposed to prolonged UV light. The degree of colour change depends on the particular product, formulation and exposure conditions.

That doesn't make epoxy the wrong choice. It means you need to consider where the floor is going and what it will be exposed to.

A floor in an enclosed warehouse may have very different requirements from one in a showroom with large windows, a garage, or an area receiving direct sunlight.

Before specifying the system, ask:

• How much direct sunlight will the floor receive?
• Is colour stability important to the client?
• What does the manufacturer's technical information say about UV exposure?
• Would a UV-resistant topcoat or alternative system be more appropriate?

A flooring system should be chosen for how it needs to perform after installation, not just how good it looks on handover day.

We supply flooring products, coatings and equipment to contractors, and we're happy to share our technical knowledge to help you make informed decisions about your projects.

The better you specify, the fewer surprises your client gets later.

For many people in South Africa, finding stable work is a major challenge. When a contractor gives someone an opportunity, that job can mean something very real: being able to provide for a family, gain experience and build towards something better.

Construction has an important role to play here.

If you're a contractor, don't only look at what someone can do today. Look at what they could become with the right opportunity, guidance and experience.

You might have someone starting with basic skills who, over time, can become a skilled installer, supervisor, specialist or even develop their own business.

A few things contractors can do:

• Give people clear responsibilities and expectations
• Teach your team how to do things properly, rather than just telling them what to do
• Pair less experienced workers with people who can teach them
• Give good workers opportunities to take on more responsibility
• Recognise improvement and effort

Developing your own people can help you build a more capable team, reduce your reliance on finding skilled workers from elsewhere and create people who understand your standards and how you work.

At Dr Concrete, we supply construction materials, coatings, tools and equipment to contractors. We want our customers to build successful businesses, and that includes encouraging them to think about the people who help them build those businesses.

The right floor coating is only part of the job. Knowing how to install it properly is just as important.

We don't believe contractors should simply buy a product and be left to figure out the rest.

We supply a wide range of floor coatings for different applications, but we also offer training to help your team understand how to install them correctly.

That means looking at the things that can make or break a flooring project:

• Correct substrate preparation
• Mixing products properly
• Understanding application techniques
• Working within the required application conditions
• Allowing the correct curing times
• Understanding what can cause coating failure

Good products can only perform as intended when they are correctly specified, prepared, mixed and applied.

This is particularly important when you're putting your reputation behind the finished floor. A coating failure doesn't just mean fixing a floor. It can mean lost time, additional costs and an unhappy client.

Our role is to supply the products and equipment you need, but we're also here to help you and your team develop the knowledge to use them properly.

We want to see you deliver floors you're proud to put your name on.

Recently, we supplied and exported a bulk order of fibre to Malawi for a large warehouse project.

The fibre was specified for use in the concrete to help improve its performance and strength, and the project required a significant volume.

So why did they choose Dr Concrete?

It came down to the complete package.

Our pricing was competitive for the volume required, but price was only part of the decision. Our reputation, reliability and ability to make the process straightforward also played an important role.

It’s not simply having the right product at the right price. It’s being able to supply at scale, communicate clearly, deliver on what you commit to and make it easy for your customer to get the job done.

For contractors, meeting deadlines and complying with the requirements of a project isn’t just about keeping the client happy. It can have a direct impact on your bottom line.

Delays can result in additional costs, strained client relationships, and, depending on the contract, financial penalties. Non-compliance can create its own set of consequences, particularly when requirements were clearly included in the contract or project documentation.

A few practical habits can help reduce the risk:

• Understand the deadline. Know exactly what completion means and what is expected from you.

• Build realistic timelines. Allow for material lead times, preparation, curing, inspections, weather and potential delays.

• Know your obligations. Read the contract and project requirements carefully before committing to the work.

• Document changes. If the scope, timeline or requirements change, make sure this is properly recorded and agreed.

• Communicate early. If you see a potential delay or compliance issue developing, raise it before it becomes a bigger problem.

At Dr Concrete, we supply specialised construction materials, coatings, tools and equipment to contractors every day. We've also spent years in the industry and understand the pressures that come with delivering projects on time and to the required standard.

We share this information because we want our customers to build stronger, more profitable businesses.

Good planning doesn't eliminate every risk. It gives you a much better chance of managing it before it costs you.

In construction, things don’t always go according to plan. When something goes wrong, the difference between a minor setback and a serious financial problem often comes down to insurance and liability cover.

Just to be clear, we’re not selling insurance here, we’re sharing this information because it’s surprising how many contractors overlook this part of their business. Having the right cover in place doesn’t just protect you, it builds trust with your clients and shows that you take your work seriously.

Every contractor’s risk profile is different. That’s why it’s worth speaking to an insurance broker who understands the construction environment and can help you identify the specific cover you need, whether that’s for equipment, public liability, professional indemnity, or project-specific risks.

It’s also worth consulting a labour specialist to make sure your employment practices, safety compliance, and site operations are aligned with South African law.

Our focus is supplying the products and equipment you rely on every day, but we also want to see you succeed long-term. If you’d like to connect with the right professionals for insurance or labour advice, we can point you in the right direction.
