Two children can share a room without needing the same room.

This is where shared bedrooms often go wrong.

We try to make everything equal.

Same storage.
Same space.
Same everything.

But a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old aren't at the same stage.

They don't play the same way.
They don't need the same things.
They don't have the same level of independence.

Fair doesn't always mean identical.

So when I design a shared room, I don't start with:

โ€œHow do I fit two children into this room?โ€

I start with:

โ€œWhat does each child need from this room?โ€

Then we can work out what should be shared, what should belong to each child, and what needs to change as they grow.

The goal isn't to create two mini bedrooms squeezed into one.

It's one room that works for two different little people.

That's the difference thoughtful design can make.

Save this if you're designing a shared room.

The problem you see isn't always the problem you need to solve...

Hereโ€™s something Iโ€™ve learned from designing childrenโ€™s spacesโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘‡

Sometimes the problem Mom sees isn't actually where the problem starts.

Your child's room is always messy?
๐Ÿ‘‰ You might think you need more storage.

Your child moves from one activity to another?
๐Ÿ‘‰ You might think they need to concentrate better.

The room feels too small?
๐Ÿ‘‰ You might think you need to get rid of furniture.

Before changing anything, I look at how the room is actually being used.

Sometimes:

โ€ข the storage is in the wrong place
โ€ข there isn't enough clear floor space
โ€ข too much is competing for attention
โ€ข the room isn't supporting the child's routines
โ€ข or the layout simply isn't working

That's why I don't start with choosing furniture or colours.

I start with:

What's actually making everyday life in this room difficult?

Once you understand the real problem, you can design the right solution.

Two little boys. One bedroom. ๐Ÿ‘ฌ

It sounds greatโ€ฆ

Until you start thinking about everything that has to fit in there. ๐Ÿ˜…

๐Ÿงธ Two sets of toys
๐Ÿ‘• Two wardrobes
๐Ÿ“š Books
๐Ÿšœ Collections
๐Ÿ› Two beds

They still need space to play, move and just be kids.

Hereโ€™s the problemโ€ฆ

When you try to make everything fit, it's very easy to end up with a room that feels cramped, cluttered and impossible to keep organised.

What if the answer isn't more storage or smaller furniture?

What if the room simply needs to be designed around how the boys actually use it?

That's exactly where I'm starting with my next project

A playful, natural farm-inspired bedroom for two little boys. ๐ŸŒฟ

Before I choose any dรฉcor, fabrics or furniture, I'm planning what this room needs to do for both of them.

A shared bedroom should feel like their room

Not two bedrooms squeezed into one.

Would you struggle more with the storage or the layout?

Spring always makes me think about how quickly children change. ๐ŸŒฑ

One minute they're playing on the floor with the same three toys every dayโ€ฆ

and suddenly they're into something completely different.

They're growing.
Their personalities are developing.
Their needs are changing.

Sometimes, you look at their room and realise:

โ€œThis doesn't really work for us anymore.โ€

That's why, for me, designing a child's room is never just about choosing pretty colours or finding the cutest dรฉcor.

It starts with listening.

Listening to what your child loves.

Listening to what they need.

Perhaps most importantly, listening to what Mom is struggling with. ๐Ÿ˜…

Because behind every beautiful children's room is usually a real-life problem to solve:

๐Ÿงธ Not enough space to play
๐Ÿงบ Toys that never seem to have a home
๐Ÿ“š Nowhere to read or unwind
๐Ÿ‘ซ Siblings sharing one space
๐ŸŒฑ A room that's already being outgrown

That's the part of children's interior design I love most.

Taking the everyday things that aren't quite working and turning them into a space that feels considered, functional and completely theirs.

I'm about to start working on another children's room and I'm taking you along for the process.

But before I doโ€ฆ

I'm curious what YOU actually want to see.

Behind the scenes?
The design decisions?
The messy middle?
Or the final transformation?

Tell me below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Happy Spring ๐ŸŒฑ

A beautiful bedroom ๐—–๐—ข๐—จ๐—Ÿ๐—— still be the wrong bedroom for your child. ๐Ÿ‘€

At 4โ€“5 years old, your childโ€™s bedroom is no longer just a place to sleep.

Itโ€™s where they play out stories, make things, look at books, practise getting dressed, move their bodies and slowly learn to do more for themselves.

So when I design a childโ€™s room, Iโ€™m not only thinking about how it will look.

Iโ€™m thinking about how your child will **use it.**

For this ballerina bedroom, every part of the design was given a purpose:

๐Ÿฉฐ ๐—œ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜†: A reading nook with a tutu-inspired canopy creates a little world for her to escape into.

A dressing area gives her a place to practise getting ready and doing things for herself.

A dedicated reading corner creates a cosy space to slow down and reset.

Open floor space gives her room to move, dance and play without furniture getting in the way.

The result isnโ€™t just a room that looks beautiful.

Itโ€™s a room designed around ๐—ง๐—›๐—˜ ๐—Ÿ๐—œ๐—ง๐—ง๐—Ÿ๐—˜ ๐—š๐—œ๐—ฅ๐—Ÿ ๐—ช๐—›๐—ข ๐—Ÿ๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ฆ ๐—œ๐—ก ๐—œ๐—ง.

Thatโ€™s what I believe good childrenโ€™s design should do.

If your childโ€™s room looks lovely but doesnโ€™t quite ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฌ for your family anymore, thatโ€™s a problem I can help you solve.

โ€œI want her to have a ballerina roomโ€ฆ but I donโ€™t want to redesign it in 3 years.โ€

This is where designing a childโ€™s room gets interesting...

The goal isnโ€™t to avoid the things your child loves right now. Itโ€™s to design the room so those things can change.

A 3-year-old might be obsessed with ballerinas today.

In a few years, it might be animals.
Then art.
Then something youโ€™ve never heard of before. ๐Ÿ˜‚

So instead of designing the entire room around the theme, we built the room around her.

๐Ÿฉฐ The ballerina details bring her current world into the room.
๐Ÿค The base of the room stays calm and timeless.
๐Ÿ“š The reading nook gives her a space to explore and imagine.
๐Ÿงธ The layout supports how she plays and moves now.

โœจ The more permanent elements can grow with her.

Thatโ€™s the difference between decorating a childโ€™s roomโ€ฆand designing one.

You donโ€™t have to say no to the pink.
You just need to know where to put it.

This is how we create kidsโ€™ rooms that feel right for them now, without starting from scratch every few years.

If youโ€™re planning your childโ€™s room and want to know what to make permanent and what to keep flexible, follow along. ๐Ÿค

A room designed to grow with her ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿฉฐ

Most moms start with a vision.

๐Ÿ‘‰ You find the prettiest ballerina wallpaper.
๐Ÿ‘‰ You save a few pink bedrooms on Pinterest.
๐Ÿ‘‰ You find a bed you love.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Then suddenlyโ€ฆ youโ€™re not sure how to make it all work together.

The room can easily become too themed.

The furniture doesnโ€™t quite fit the layout.

Thereโ€™s nowhere to read, play or get dressed independently and before you know it, youโ€™ve spent money creating a room sheโ€™ll outgrow in a few years.

Thatโ€™s exactly what we wanted to avoid with this ballerina bedroom.

A soft, playful space with gentle pinks, natural textures and carefully considered details, designed around how a little girl actually uses her room.

A cosy reading nook creates space for quiet time and imagination.
Defined areas for sleep, reading and play make the room easier to use and removable details mean the ballerina theme can change as she does.

At Mies Studio, every kidsโ€™ room starts with the plan before the pretty pieces, so you can see how the space will work before you start buying.
