A remote ceiling fan has a receiver—but where do the wires actually connect?

This video explains the basic layout in simple language:

Roof power → Receiver → Fan
Earth from the roof → Directly to the fan

Most modern receivers connect to the fan and light using matching plug-and-play connectors. The important part is identifying the receiver’s INPUT and OUTPUT correctly.

Safety first: Switch off the correct circuit at the DB board and confirm the power is dead before touching any wiring. Never rely only on the remote or wall switch. If you are uncertain, use a qualified electrician.

Stopping your ceiling fan with the remote does not necessarily mean the fan is electrically safe.

The blades may have stopped, but the receiver and wiring inside the fan can still be live.

If you are going to clean the fan, remove the canopy, inspect a fitting or carry out any repair, isolate the circuit at the DB board first. A stopped fan is not the same thing as an isolated fan.

Looks like wood. But what is it actually made from?

Two ceiling fan blades can look almost identical while being made from completely different materials.

Solid wood gives you the genuine natural material and grain. Polywood and composite blades can recreate the timber look using engineered materials. ABS blades are moulded, lightweight and highly resistant to moisture.

That difference becomes especially important in Durban and coastal KZN, where humidity can be tough on unsuitable blade materials.

So don't choose a ceiling fan by colour and finish alone.

Ask what the blades are actually made from, where the fan will be installed and whether that material is suitable for the environment.

That small question before you buy can make a big difference later.
