This is the moment. Boitumelo was named winner of the inaugural Ventures Foundation by Sanlam Private Wealth at 100% Design Johannesburg.

Before the programme, I always believed our work deserved to be in the premium market. I just did not have the courage to play in that space yet.

The programme gave me that courage. And the numbers to back it up.

People remember me as the alien lady before they even remember my name. And honestly, I have learned to love that. Because the more people hear it, the more they want to know. And the more they know, the more awareness grows around the crisis we have in our water bodies.

This rug is called Fresh Ground. It is inspired by Adam’s Calendar, one of the oldest stone structures in Africa and a custodian of indigenous knowledge. Braamfontein Spruit, where we harvest, is a Ramsar wetland of global importance. Two heritage sites, one golden thread. That thread is conservation. Conservation of culture, conservation of heritage, conservation of water.

Being named winner of the inaugural Ventures Foundation by Sanlam Private Wealth was an emotional moment for me. It means access to markets and networks we would not otherwise reach, and mentors in brand development, financial modelling and design who have already shaped how I see this business. It also means the chance to bring Thekga Movement, and the community behind it, into rooms we have never been in before.

I grew up passionate about conservation, biodiversity and water. I could not reconcile why we were importing hyacinth products from the East while our own water bodies were in crisis.

So I built a movement to change that.

Conservation of culture. Conservation of heritage. Conservation of water.

This is the plant that started everything. Harvested from the Braamfontein Spruit, a Ramsar wetland of global importance that is currently in crisis. The more we harvest, the more the wetland recovers. The more we weave, the more communities earn.

She used to walk past the wetland and see a w**d. Now she sees her livelihood. Her business. Her future.

We started with 30 women. They came for interviews. We checked their craftsmanship. Six months later, five of them became the core of our micro-enterprise. Now more are knocking on the door every week.

This is what Thekga Movement is really about.

This is Fresh Ground.

It is inspired by Adam’s Calendar, one of the most ancient stone structures in Africa, and woven from water hyacinth harvested from Braamfontein Spruit, a Ramsar wetland of global importance.

Two heritage sites. One golden thread. Conservation.

Winner, inaugural Ventures Foundation by Sanlam Private Wealth. And I am still processing that.
