Modern Gesture designs and produces conceptual furniture pieces, homeware and lighting designs
in Cape Town. Exploring different production techniques
and craft skills in a very basic way, exploring themes and
experimenting with the properties of materials such as ceramics and off cuts of plywood. Like nature no two pieces are alike,
each item is hand assembled and hand finished to
ensure something with character,
timelessness and a sense of the unexpected.

We’re excited to share that Modern Gesture, founded by Candice Lawrence, will be showcasing in Cape Town as part of Design Week South Africa, taking place from 22–25 October 2026.

As part of the week, Candice will be exhibiting at ROOTED: Open Gallery, a collectible design exhibition by Objects by Eight, hosted by The Sourcing Lab.

Bringing together a curated group of South African designers, ROOTED explores identity, heritage, material and place, looking at how our cultural roots can inspire new expressions of contemporary design.

For Modern Gesture, this is a wonderful opportunity to share our approach to materials, making and craftsmanship, and to showcase the work that Candice and the team have been developing.

Behind every Modern Gesture piece is a team of people who help bring it to life. For Candice, that team includes someone particularly special - her dad.

Around the workshop he’s known as Uncle John and has been part of the Modern Gesture journey from early on, supporting Candice behind the scenes, keeping the lights on (literally, in our case), running the CNC, keeping the machinery maintained, and always just a phone call away to help when something needs sorting.

From cutting the very first pieces to keeping the machines going, his hands have touched so much of what happens here. His practical knowledge and hands-on approach have made him someone we genuinely rely on. Ask him to help and he just does it - no fuss, no complaints, whatever the workshop needs that day. He’s also the one who’s weirdly ahead of the curve on tech, AI included.

Behind every founder is usually a team making the ideas possible. We’re proud he’s part of ours. ❤️

At the heart of Modern Gesture is Candice Lawrence, Founder and creative force behind the brand.

Candice founded Modern Gesture with a passion for exploring materials, colour, form and the relationship between handcrafted design and the spaces we inhabit.

What started as an exploration of materials and making has grown into a design studio creating distinctive lighting, screens, repeat patterns and bespoke pieces for residential, hospitality and commercial spaces.

Candice’s approach is all about pushing materials beyond the expected, combining craftsmanship with contemporary design to create pieces that are not only functional, but become part of the architecture and story of a space.

From concept and experimentation through to the finished piece, Candice remains closely involved in the creative process, ensuring every Modern Gesture piece carries the character and attention to detail that the brand is known for.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT | Nando’s Dublin Mary Street

Bringing the Nando’s brand to life through bespoke lighting.

For Nando’s Dublin Mary Street, Modern Gesture created Geo Pendants in custom colours, specifically selected to complement Nando’s distinctive brand palette.

The geometric forms add rhythm and visual interest overhead, while the bold colours tie the lighting seamlessly into the wider interior design.

A great example of how custom lighting can become part of a brand’s visual language, rather than simply illuminating a space.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT | Nando’s Soshanguve DT

For Nando’s Soshanguve DT, Modern Gesture created a collection of bespoke pendants designed to complement the restaurant’s bold visual identity.

The installation combines our handcrafted Woven Necklace Pendants in Red, Black and White with our Tall Fountain Pendants Natural.

The result is a layered, sculptural lighting installation that brings colour, texture and movement to the ceiling while adding warmth to the space.

Pattern and repetition in design has long been used to, create structure, rhythm, beauty and harmony, to provoke and reshape our way of seeing. NEW to the Modern Gesture range is a collection of repeat prints, inspired by our off-cuts of wood. Looking at these layers of odd and unique shapes piled up in our workshop, a vibrant fun range of repeat textile patterns emerged!
