Everyone tells brides to compare portfolios.
Almost nobody tells them what to compare after that.

Here are the questions I wish every bride would ask before saying YES to a florist.

DON’T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT, TAKE THEIRS!

The PAUSE experience is hard to explain until you’ve lived it… the flowers, the friendships, the confidence, the business conversations, the countless ‘aha!-moments’.
So we asked our students to share what PAUSE meant to them.
And honestly? Their words say it better than we ever could.
Swipe through to hear from the women who joined us around the table, picked up the flowers, asked the questions, built the installations, made the bouquets, formed the friendships and left with so much more than just pretty pictures.
This is what PAUSE is really about.

Previous PAUSE students: tell future students what you wish YOU knew before joining.

MY 5 TOP TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR FOOT IN THE DOOR OF THE FLORAL WORLD:

🌸 1. ATTEND A FLORAL WORKSHOP
Nothing accelerates your growth quite like learning from people who have already walked the path before you. And as luck would have it, I’m presenting a 3-day intensive floral workshop alongside my floral bestie Amanda from KADOU in Paarl at Laborie Wine Estate.
✨ 23–25 June (SOLD OUT)
✨ 15–17 September (limited seats still available)
This will be the 11th Pause. Floral Workshops we’ve presented together and over the years we’ve had the privilege of helping hundreds of florists build both their design skills and confidence.
If you’d like more information, pop us an email at [email protected].

🌸 2. PRACTICE. Then practice some more.
The most beautiful arrangements don’t happen because someone watched a single tutorial. They happen because someone kept creating, failing, learning and trying again.

🌸 3. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER FLORISTS
Floristry can feel lonely if you’re trying to learn everything on your own. Connect with like-minded flower lovers, ask questions, share experiences and learn from each other. One of my favourite things about Pause. Floral Workshops is seeing the friendships and support networks that form long after the workshop ends.

🌸 4. NEVER STOP LEARNING
There is so much incredible information available today.
• YouTube tutorials
• Online courses from reputable florists
• Podcasts about floral design
• Business and entrepreneurship podcasts
• Books on design, colour and creativity
The best florists are usually the ones who never stop being students.

🌸 5. BE WILLING TO START AT THE BOTTOM
Offer to freelance for florists whose work you admire, for FREE. Carry buckets. Sweep floors. Process flowers. Pack vans.
You’d be amazed how much you can learn simply by observing experienced florists in action.
But be willing to earn your place. Don’t expect to arrive and immediately design installations or bouquets without any foundation. Remember, every florist you admire started somewhere and most of us started right at the bottom too!

“Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is exhausting for children to have to provide explanations over and over again.”

One of the many beautiful lessons from the book, ‘The Little Prince’, is the reminder to see the world with wonder.

This baby shower was inspired by that very spirit, soft, whimsical and full of magic. Fragrant garden roses + marshmallow pink peonies came together to create a celebration of new beginnings, tiny adventures yet to come and the kind of love that teaches us what truly matters.

The best weddings happen when a couple stops asking, ‘What should we do?’ and starts asking, ‘What feels like us?’ When flowers are chosen for feeling, not fashion.

When I saw Kayla and Noman’s photos, every single shot looked like the best moment of the day!
A floral alice band matching her flaming red hair. Bridesmaids carrying armfuls of sunshine. Happy tears, loud, belly laughter at the altar + bear hugs all around! The flowers ranging between golden yellows, apricots, peaches + burnt oranges; a palette that felt as warm and vibrant as the people gathered beneath those trees.
One of my favourite things about weddings is watching a couple give themselves permission to do things their way. Not because it’s trendy. Not because it’s expected. Simply because it feels like them.
And that’s exactly what their day was.
Joyful. Colourful. Unapologetically personal.
A beautiful reminder that the best weddings aren’t the most perfect ones.
They’re the ones filled with the most love + laughter!

✨ Kayla + Noman, thank you for trusting us to add a little floral magic to your story!

!! NEW WORKSHOP ALERT !!

Flowers are easy to admire. Harder to truly see. This experience is about the latter.

The Glass Garden is a workshop we are hosting in collaboration with Anni from .
You’ll start by creating an ikebana-inspired still life. Fruit, flowers, your own hands deciding what goes where. and will guide the process, but the result will be entirely yours.

Then Anni takes over. Using oil paint on glass, you’ll translate what you’ve built into a painting. She’ll walk you through it step by step. No experience needed, no pressure to get it ‘right’.

This one’s for the florists who’ve always wondered what it would feel like to paint what they arrange. For the moms who keep saying they’ll do something for themselves, but never quite get there. And for anyone who just needs a full, quiet day of making something beautiful.

Also, if you’re still looking for a Mother’s Day gift that isn’t a candle or a pair of slippers, here it is.

Investment: R4,500 per person.

Seats are limited. Book your seat here: https://www.pausefloral.com/shop/the-glass-garden/

Included:
* Mini ceramic vase, secateurs, a bucket of flowers + metal kenzan
* Oil painting starter kit, plexi glass canvas + wooden stand for your masterpiece
* Lunch, bottomless coffee + tea

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to slow down + just invest in your own creativity, this is it. We’d love to have you! 🤍
