The End of an Era — Our Goodbye to Spargs

We have sold Spargs.

Even writing those words feels unreal. For close to 50 years, this shop in Wharf Street, Port Alfred, has been woven into the story of our family. In a few weeks’ time, a new owner will walk through doors that have held so much of our lives within them.

To many, it’s just a shop.

To us, it has been home.

This building dates back to 1826 and has taken on many identities over time — a paint shop, a “Kash Kowie,” a shoe shop. It has stored sheep shearing wool, served as an aircraft hangar, and stood quietly through the changing story of Port Alfred. For nearly five decades, it has carried ours.

Our journey here began when my great-aunt brought the premises into our family. My grandfather, Dalys Sparg — and my dad, Mark Pauls remain part of this story. And for over 30 years, Mom and I have given this business everything we had.

But Spargs was never just us.

It was built, carried, and sustained by the most remarkable team. Staff who showed up day after day with loyalty, patience, humour and heart. Some have been part of this journey for decades. They welcomed you, helped you, solved problems, honoured guarantees, and quietly carried the weight of the business alongside us.

Over the years, Spargs became more than a business. It became a constant — through change, through loss, through growth. We worked at it relentlessly, and in return, it gave us something extraordinary: a community of loyal customers and a team we are endlessly proud of.

In the coming weeks there will be new ownership who will bring exciting new changes. We look forward to the improvements the new owners will bring and we know Port Alfred and surrounds will benefit in the future. We wish them a prosperous and joyous experience in our beautiful town.

Many of the staff you know and trust will remain. Warranties and guarantees will be honoured. The spirit of Spargs lives in the people who serve you, and that will carry forward.

We will continue trading until 20 May, and as we begin this transition, we are offering excellent deals across the store — including 20% off all furniture, antiques and décor items.

To our loyal customers: thank you. For your support, your trust, and for being part of this story.
