A New Chapter for Wezandla: Introducing Wezandla Amatola 🌿

For over 30 years, Wezandla has celebrated the artistry, skill, and cultural heritage of Africa - bringing together an exceptional collection of handcrafted treasures from across the continent.

Established in Port Elizabeth in 1994 by the late Glynis Baer, Wezandla has grown through the years while remaining true to its founding purpose: to showcase the work of talented African artisans and share their craftsmanship with the world.

In 2016, Kevin Boucher took over the business, continuing this proud legacy and guiding Wezandla into its next chapter.

Today, that story takes us to East London. 📍

Together with business partner Victor Krull, whose family has deep roots in the Amatola region - we are delighted to introduce Wezandla Amatola: a new destination for authentic African art, crafts, curios, home décor, and unique gifts.

Every handcrafted piece carries its own character, tradition, and story. We invite you to explore our new space, discover something unexpected, and find a treasure to take home.

🐆 LEOPARD BRONZE SCULPTURE - Proudly South African, deeply meaningful.

This powerful bronze piece is part of a Big Five collection created exclusively for Wezandla African Craft Traders by talented local sculptor Zano Ntombela.

Zano’s love for nature began during his childhood in the Eastern Cape, sketching animals near the riverbanks of Cookhouse. Under the mentorship of bronze artist Talitha Deetlefts, he found his calling in the art of foundry work.

🌍 Discover the Story Behind Our Decorative Ostrich Eggs 🥚✨

More than just a beautiful décor piece, ostrich eggs hold deep cultural and historical significance in Southern Africa.

For centuries, the San people (Bushmen) have used hollowed ostrich eggshells as water containers—an ingenious and natural canteen for survival in the arid Kalahari. These tough shells could hold over a litre of water and were often buried in secret spots as emergency reserves.

But their purpose didn’t end there. Ostrich eggshells were also broken into pieces and skillfully shaped into beads, strung together to create intricate jewellery. These beads are still a treasured part of traditional adornment and storytelling in many African cultures today.

Our decorative ostrich eggs are a modern tribute to this ancient tradition—hand-painted, carved, or adorned by skilled artisans from across Southern Africa. Each one is a unique piece of art, echoing a history of beauty, utility, and resilience.

We welcomed a powerful portrait by Roxanne Munro into the Wezandla gallery — one of the first pieces that would eventually inspire our now well-loved collection, “Faces of Africa.”

A few years back that very painting found its forever home, sold to someone who connected deeply with its story and spirit.

Today, “Faces of Africa” has grown into a stunning celebration of African identity — a vibrant, soulful tribute told through portraiture.
