Soft light, expressive brushstrokes and fleeting moments. Impressionism transformed the way artists captured the world around them.
The movement took its name from Claude Monet’s Impression, Sunrise, exhibited in 1874. Critic Louis Leroy dismissed the work as merely an “impression” rather than a finished painting, but the name ultimately came to define an entirely new approach to art.
Impressionist artists embraced short, broken brushstrokes, pure colour and the changing effects of light. Instead of relying heavily on black, grey or white, they often used colour to create shadows and highlights, giving their work a sense of movement and spontaneity.
As Monet once said, “I must have flowers, always, and always.” 🌸
A beautiful reminder to notice the light, colour and beauty in the everyday.
