Lilly Loompa Upcycled Gifting

Lilly Loompa Upcycled Gifting Upcycled Gifting. Our products are made with used material and created into beautiful and usable lifestyle products Hi, I'm Lizl and I'm a recovering nomad.

This wandering lifestyle, although interesting, wasn't necessarily by choice. Up until today, as a couple, we've moved over 42 times. In 2002, at the age of 24, we tied the knot and started our lives together. I still smile when I think about our naivety and the level of optimism we had when we took on the world! We both worked in corporate, but our passion and purpose have always been connected t

o communities and people. After all, our love story began at the age of 21 at a community centre in Paarl, where we first met. Five months into our marriage, I had an unfortunate freak accident at our duplex flat, when I fell off the stairs and nearly broke my back. I can still hear the doctor's words ringing in my ears; 'If your body swung a little to the left or to the right, you could have been paralyzed!' That sentence haunted me for weeks while I recovered at home. Turned out I only broke the 2 wings off my lower vertebrae. Praise be to God! But locking up a creative for 8 weeks in a bed is not a good idea! I was bored out of my socks! Ashley went to work daily and I was stuck in bed! After about 3 weeks I felt really well enough to drive, against the doctor's initial orders not to! I carefully got in my car and slowly drove to the closest bead shop! I was desperate to get out! 😊

To cut a long story short, making jewellery in bed was a lifesaver. It gave me so much pleasure and when I returned to the office most of my colleagues were interested. After careful consideration and consulting with Ashley, I decided to quit my job, to pursue the jewellery business fulltime. So in 2004, Lilly Loompa Jewellery was born. It took me some time to settle on a name for the business, but I knew it had to have longevity and substance. When I was a child, Lilly was my nickname and Loompa comes from my favourite children's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 😊

Fast forward to 2010. By this time I have qualified as an Interior Decorator and Lilly Loompa Jewellery is no longer. Our family has grown to four strong with two girls added, Chelsea and Kirsten. In blind faith we decided to move to Jozi after a series of failed business transactions and investments. I start a blog to chronicle our moves and adventures so our family back home can stay in the loop. Because we never have any budget for decorating, I'm always rummaging for treasures to upcycle as furniture. I post these DIY stints on my blog and occasionally submit them as articles to a few magazines. Another few unfortunate events happen over the next few years, which culminates to us losing everything over 4 times. Illegal evictions, robberies and our car stolen, among a few. During these desperate times of homelessness and being uprooted, I cling on to my passion of making a home and doing it with NOTHING. We are barely making it with no income and no budget, only by the grace of God. He dispatched so many angels, too many to mention. Not forgetting our parents and family who supported us so faithfully and still continues today. I remember one specific day in 2014 when I fell to my knees and cried out, 'LORD, please just give me an idea!' Being the humorous God He is, He showed me waste! So Lilly Loompa was resurrected again, this time as an upcycling business. In 2016, our season in Jozi came to an end and we moved back to Paarl! Since then, we've been rebuilding our lives and God has slowly, but faithfully, been restoring our lives. Lilly Loompa is part of my life story. Ashley always says she our eldest daughter. 😂She is strong, creative and passionate. Above all, she is tenacious and determined to showcase the possibilities that can be found in waste. Lilly Loompa manufactures a variety of products, from storage holders, lamps, to dinner table accessories, among others. Our homeware is created through a process of hipcycling, which is essentially upcycling discarded waste and transforming it into desirable products that would complement your home. Eco-friendly, handcrafted and 100% South African, each Lilly Loompa piece, once trash, is now a meaningful piece of treasure.

She was flying to the US on Friday… and we had three days to make this happen!

One of my favourite collaborations from this year.🥰

Lesego from Moedi Wines and I have travelled to three countries together over the years through different wine and tourism spaces, so this project felt extra special.

She came to us at WTM Africa, with an idea for petite Africa-shaped wine charms made from recycled plastic for her wine bottles heading to the US.

The timing was tight — she was flying out that Friday — but within half an hour the team had a sample ready. The next day we showed her the colour options and final runs… and she loved them so much, she doubled the order 😄

I really love moments like this. Women collaborating, moving quickly, backing each other, and building proudly African products together.🇿🇦👊🏽

Also featuring Karin Witbooi, from SA Wine, who jokingly decided she needed one for herself as a necklace charm 😂

Sometimes the best products come from simple conversations and people willing to make things happen.

MILKING

This is what we do with your donated cereal boxes - create packaging for our keyrings and magnets!

While I was cutting today, I thought of the word “milking” — and how we use it with almost every task in the workshop.

Trying to get every usable inch from the material.
Fitting pieces together carefully so nothing gets wasted.

And what’s left behind is always the skeleton of the sheet.

It made me think about how much value is still there, even in what’s usually discarded. ♻️

It doesn’t start in a factory.
It starts with someone choosing not to throw something away.🙌🏽🇿🇦♻️

This batch came from a donation, thank you Ciska! Material that could easily have been discarded, but instead gets a second life.♻️

That’s how this works. Not just production — participation.

If you’ve got material lying around, don’t throw it away — send it our way!

Today on Workers' Day, I’m thinking about the kind of work that doesn’t always get seen.👷🏽‍♀️

The early drives. The traffic. The training sessions. The small, behind-the-scenes moments that slowly build something real.

This week was a reminder for me — sometimes the work shows up quietly… like products already sold out before you even arrive.

And for a small business, that means everything.
If you’ve ever chosen one of our pieces, just know — you’re part of that story. ♻️

On this episode of Lilly Travels, we stopped by Needles restaurant in L'Agulhas 🌊

A special visit to support our friends stepping boldly into food hospitality. Great food, beautiful space, and a story worth backing ✨

If you’re in the area, go show them some love!

Earth Day, but make it practical ♻️🌍

A simple way to turn newspaper into a quick gift bag—using what you already have.📰
We think a lot about materials and what they can become, without needing something new.
Sometimes it starts with something this small.✊🏽

This one was quite special for us. [US, excuse the pun!]♻️

We made these recycled plastic coasters for the Maties Alumni Department—they were handed out by the Rector as gifts in Namibia last week. He also intends to take them on his roadshow across Africa next month.🌍

By complete coincidence, we were also in Namibia last week. Ashley was representing us and ended up meeting the Rector in person… which felt like a full-circle moment.

What stood out to me most is the intention behind this product and order. There’s a clear move towards more responsible choices, and it’s encouraging to see that reflected in something as simple as a gift.👊🏽

Each piece is made from recycled plastic, so no two are ever the same. Even the packaging is made from repurposed cereal boxes—trying to keep things as considered as possible, all the way through.♻️🙌🏽

Grateful to be part of it. [Original design by Lilly Loompa Upcycled Gifting]
