Esra Bosch’s career as a ceramist began in 1985 when she joined her late father, celebrated master potter Esias Bosch, and her brother, distinguished potter Anton Bosch, at the Bosch Studio near White River in the Mpumalanga Lowveld. The well-known Bosch Studio, built on a rocky outcrop with a view across to the mountains of Swaziland, was established in 196

1 by her father, and this is where Esra still works and where visitors go to view her ceramics. Esra’s artistic training was supervised by her father and from him she learnt the basic skills of ceramics. “The scent of clay, the sensation of clay, the thud of clay being thrown onto a wheel, the clear sound of two fired pots, fresh from the kiln, softly knocking against each other. The language of clay which my parents, Esias and Valerie Bosch, shared with me since my birth in 1951. These are the impressions which my memories are made of,” Esra reminisces. Esias had a disciplined approach to his work and did not tolerate half-measures. His output was enormous and he mastered every aspect of ceramics – and passed his expertise on to his children. “Esias had an impressive work ethic - and such creative energy! He taught me all I know as far as practical issues around pottery, exposure to the many dimensions of raw materials, techniques, approaches, clay-recipes, recipes of glazes and kilns are concerned. In short, I became an apprentice to a potter who taught me how to approach every single aspect related to a fully functioning ceramic studio,” says Esra. Esra’s approach to her career - spanning thirty odd years - speaks of dedication and discipline. Her studio is active and her work space is highly organised.

“My days in the studio are filled with activity. With the help of two assistants, I mix my own clay and glazes and every item is handmade – either moulded or on a wheel. I deal with my clients on a personal basis and spend time with visitors to the studio,” she says. Esra’s work has developed over the years into a range of ceramics with a distinctive style. She produces striking individual pieces, vases, oil lamps, tiles and a substantial range of functional ware such as platters, bowls and dishes. Her ceramics are bold, contemporary and aesthetically pleasing. Her work is sought after for its excellent decorator skills, flair for colour and an impressive sense of pattern.

Fresh produce is, well, fresher when it comes straight from the farm without travelling thousands of kilometres to reach its final destination. This also means that nothing needs to be done to the fruits to preserve them while in transit – nobody likes a mouldy strawberry. In keeping with the theme of preservatives, unprocessed fresh foods are packed with flavour and are free from additives, meaning that you're getting a delicious dose of necessary vitamins and minerals with every bite.

Kuns inni Liedjiebos Exhibit June 2023
At Christies@32 on Russell, Nelspruit

I was invited to participate in an exhibition, celebrating poetry, song, and art for the Innibos National Arts Festival this year, and I chose to work with a poem that spoke to truly Lowveld, and indeed, South African sentiments and nostalgia. We incorporated elements of the poem across six long dishes, which can be seen at the exhibition in Russell street, Nelspruit, during this year‘s festival.

Op reis
Ludi Botha

Ek sien swiepende koringlande,
of ’n plaat goudgeel sonneblomme.

Ek tuur oor wingerde of hardloop
deur die papawerrooi vlaktes.
Ek lê in die ongenoeg skadu
van ’n kokosneutpalm, voel sand.
Ek teug aan wyn in ’n ou bouval.
Ek ruik ’n varsgebakte plaasbrood
en sien die songeel botter sag smelt.
Ek lê langs ’n poel op sag’ groen gras
en kyk hoe die wilgertakke bo my
sag saggies heen en weer swiep en swaai.

Ek wandel deur die lang gras na ’n
geelbruin sandsteen- Vrystaatse plaashuis.
Ek sit langs ’n pad by ’n tafel
’n rooi-en-wit blokkiestafeldoek.
’n Enkel magrietjie in ’n vaas.
Ek drink geurige warm koffie.

Op ’n plein wals ek op ritmiese
musiek wat sag oor my gesig streel.
Proe vergete vrugte van ’n boord
versteek tussen populierbome
versamel varkore langs ’n stroom.

Ek smul aan bokmelkkaas en drink melk.
Ek sit op ’n sonwarm klipplaat.
