A couple of weekends ago i had the privilege of taking part in a slow stitch weekend where we made Taliswomen…it was such a gentle weekend, and as someone who holds space for others, it was held really lovingly by Kara and at Mt Vic’s stunning So incredibly grateful.

This piece is double sided (i’ve kept one side a secret) and the doll is still in the process of finding her mask. They, alongside her story, will be unveiled at my Imaginal exhibition next year.

I hear there are other potential Taliswoman workshops happening next year…i’m hoping to head back for my second ♥️ and for those that think they can’t sew or you are at a basic level, thats me too…

I wove something to hold my grief process items…i used hand spun hand dyed 100% merino wool which i liked symbolically to represent the slow, intentional process that this grief work has been and the wool reminds me of mycelium…

It was an intensive process, learnt some things along the way, took a lot of patience and troubleshooting. Its perfectly imperfect….

I have another one to go but I’m doing something different with that one. Watch this space..

Sneak peak of the Blue Lake drum. This one was really complicated and is not my neatest work however for the purposes of this drum, it is actually perfect. It actually would have done the story behind this drum a disservice if it had been perfect.

I chose to do netting for this drum as it is about connection, some connections are messy and entangled, some look perfect on the surface but in fact are void of depth, some are big open spaces and others are tight and restrictive. Working with skin can be really difficult sometimes because you are dependant on its flexibility - some parts of raw hide are malleable and others are rigid - just like us and just like connection can be.

If i had wanted it to look aesthetically perfect i could have used waxed tension cotton because it is all the one tension and slips easily but i really wanted the skin and i to work together to create a pretty solid representation of the realities of connection - or at least my experience of connection.

Interestingly i didn’t have any breaks in the cord at all while i was making it but when i was stretching and massaging the cord beforehand i did one which in the story of drum birthing is pre-birth. I also began with a shorter cord and then had to add on extra cord which is also a perfect representation - beginning with something limited and then moving towards expansion.

What i really love about this is the interconnectedness of all the parts - nothing is separate which symbolises that all our connections come together to create our own experience of connection. We are interwoven - everyone that has ever been in my life at any point in time has come together to create the story of my experience.

This next drum i am working on is inspired by this incredible body of water at Jenolan called The Blue Lake.

The waters are blue due to suspended calcium carbonate particles from the limestone bedrock scattering blue light wavelengths. The waters are never the same colour as they change with the light.

You can read more about the waters around Jenolan and Aboriginal significance on the Caves website.

Since the fires and landslides, the lake has had to be excavated twice to help it recover. During those events platypus habitats were destroyed as well as for other little creatures.

The reason behind this lake for the drum is that this drum is centred on Connection. Jenolan is where i lived for my very early years and is both a place of connection and great disconnection. The waters in Jenolan were visited by many First Nations people across Australia due to their healing properties and so i am imbuing the drum with the energy of the lake.

Excited to birth this one.
