Yes, it's one of my favourite times lf the year!!

It's CHOKO TIME!!

This white choko (a version highly sought after in local permie circles) was gifted to me last night by Kathy Bryla . It's the granddaughter of one of my plants, which sadly died off and didn’t come back last year. So, am particularly excited today!

Those who know me well, will know just how much I celebrate this plant that provides food abundance in oh so many ways.

I've even a pair of choko earrings, made from old coffee pods gifted to me by Annika Karskens Design • AKD and a small Enamelled choko object by Linda Blair.

I've decorated Council Chambers with chokoes (sometimes a bit of light relief is really needed) and handed them out at Plaza stalls at Councillor in the Plaza stalls.

Last year I noticed that Harris Farm has started selling chokoes...which has elevated their standing....but is INSANE as they can be grown so easily.

However, for the 1st time in about 20 years....my choko crop is small, with only a few fruit...could have something to do with the lack of bees in my garden now...or something else to do with the environment its growing in...but let's not go there today...because today is a day of celebration for this AMAZING food!

Ok, it's not REALLY part of my job, I just love fixing things. Mayoral chains are quite heavy so the brass jump rings sometimes come loose. This one weighs over half a kilo.

At some point, the main pendant was revamped/replaced in 1961...supplied by Angus and Coote.

Now back to what I really should be working on!!!

Happy weekend everyone, I'm off to a Deep Ecology workshop facilitated by John Seed!

This was one of a couple of remakeries made for a lovely client recently. A steel pendant made using the traditional Korean Ipsa technique, it wasn't being worn. So I made it into a ring, using 18ct gold prongs to speak to the gold inlay, with the back made from silver to keep the budget reasonable. Kept the back open, so the reverse design (which she wasn't so keen on) could still be seen.

Now it's a nice one-of-a-kind statement ring and back in circulation for special occasions!

Aarh, soooo looking forward to this!

Remakery WIP

Sometimes things get a bit unusual...and mildy stressful! 😬

This job has been an interesting one. One of the challenges with working with existing jewellery for remakes is that you don't always know what you're working with. One of the reasons I have an FAQ section on my website.

The gold bangles had unusual stampings and were originally very golden in colour. I was told they were fine gold, and when I acid tested them they came in as above 18 and below 22ct...but when I went to melt them, the flame threw off an unusual flouro green colour...and the metal just seemed, well, a bit odd.

Eesh, I thought..oh no, seems like maybe they were plated over a base metal...sometimes this does happen.

I recently had a job where the silver pendant to be melted was actually silver plated over brass...happened with a 'gold' chain too once....and someone gave me a rhinestone thinking it was a diamond.

This ingot ended up very coppery in colour (which would account for the pretty green flame).

Luckily, there were a couple of bangles leftover, so my customer went and had them tested.

Turns out they're 21ct...and I think the alloy was made using copper only, no fine silver...which is why this ring is turning out quite pink!

So all turned out ok in the end...which is a bit of a relief.
