We all love the bees in our gardens, but spare a thought for the Butterflies and Moths in your garden too, they are also very important to pollination.
They may not make honey but their fuzzy little bodies play a huge role in spreading pollen and nectar throughout the garden.
So remember to plant their favourite flowers too!

NATIVE BEE PRESENTATION 10TH OCTOBER 2026
1pm. Wingham Nursery and florist.
5 William St Wingham 2429

Diane Norris-Bee Wild.

How many of us can name 10 types of native Bees? Can you?

You may be surprised that there at least 1700 described species( now thought to be around 2000) of native Australian bees. Most are solitary, but 11 varieties are social and stingless.
In this introductory presentation, Diane, a long-time bee keeper, will impart the basics about our fascinating native bee species and how to attract them to your garden.

A stunning PowerPoint display will cover the topics of bee nesting biology, foraging behaviour, the diversity of wild bees and their importance in our environment.

Diane has more than 20 years experience amongst native bees and for over a decade has been part of Ku-ring-Gai Council’s Bee program.

She works along side Entomologists, she guides workshops and is a horticultural journalist and photographer.

Please contact the nursery if you will be attending just so we have a rough count of how many will be attending. 6553 4570 or [email protected]

Time to step out of your comfort zone.

I’ve just made some wattle flower syrup to mix with soda water and ice.
Just the perfect drink for the upcoming hot weather.

Wattle flowers are packed with antioxidants, have a high mineral content, are anti inflammatory and antibacterial.
The taste is very unique and great for your digestion.
Be sure to remove the stems and leaves as they are both bitter if left in.
We first tried this in Western Australia many years ago during the wildflower season.

Give it a go while these beautiful trees are in flower!

As always, please check any medications you are taking and if you have any allergies that may cause side effects.

🌼 Wattle Flower Syrup — A Golden Australian Floral Cordial

There is something rather magical about harvesting from nature and turning it into something delicious. 🌿✨

Today I made Wattle Flower Syrup, using freshly gathered golden wattle blossoms. The result is a beautiful golden cordial with a delicate floral, citrusy character.

🌼 Ingredients

• 2 cups fresh wattle blossoms, gently separated from the green stems
• 7.50grams sugar
• 2 litres water
• 50 g citric acid
• Zest and juice of 1–2 unwaxed lemons or limes.
* Add vanilla essence to taste after heating and before bottling.

🌿 Method

1. Harvest carefully
Only harvest from a positively identified edible wattle species and choose blossoms from a clean area away from roadsides, sprays and other contaminants. Pick when the flowers are fresh and in full bloom.

2. Prepare the blossoms
Gently shake the flower clusters to remove insects and debris. Avoid washing them if possible, as much of the beautiful aromatic pollen can be lost.

3. Make the syrup
Combine the water and caster sugar in a large saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.

4. Add the citrus
Bring the syrup to a boil, then remove from the heat. Stir in the citric acid, lemon juice and lemon zest.

5. Infuse the wattle
Add the fresh blossoms to the hot syrup, making sure they are submerged. Cover and allow to infuse for 24–48 hours in a cool place.

6. Strain and bottle
Strain through a fine sieve lined with muslin or cheesecloth. Gently squeeze the blossoms to extract the liquid, then pour into clean, sterilised glass bottles.

❄️ Storage: Keep refrigerated. Because this is a homemade cordial, treat it as a perishable product and discard it if you notice mould, fermentation, an unusual smell or other signs of spoilage.

🥂 Serving suggestion: Dilute with still or sparkling water, or experiment with using a little in desserts, mocktails or winter drinks.

🌿 A little piece of the Australian landscape captured in a bottle.

where nature inspires and intention empowers ✨

⚠️ Foraging note: Wattle identification is important because not every Acacia species should be assumed edible. Always positively identify the species before consuming, and never rely on a photograph alone.
