Mixing design style is all about blending two or more design styles to create your own custom aesthetic with the main focus on creating a cohesive and layered interior space that reflects your interests and personality. Liking elements from one specific style doesn’t limit you from borrowing from other styles to create your unique space.

That’s exactly what we did with this renovation: while the client wanted to geek out in the main living area with lights and decor showcasing their love for sci-fi, they wanted the bedroom + office combo to be calm and serene. This spaces needed to function as an office for working from home with a clean backdrop as well as a bedroom.

While keeping the colour palette and textures cohesive, we steered in the opposite direction with a minimalist style with crisp linens and soft materials. The result was an interesting juxtaposition that reads as intentional instead of disjointed.

The part nobody talks about: a designer walks into your home with zero attachment to how the space has always been used. You’ve lived there for years, you’ve worked around the layout, accepted the limitations, stopped noticing what isn’t working.

I walk in and none of that history comes with me. That fresh perspective is where some of the most valuable design decisions come from — the layout option you never considered, the wall you assumed was permanent, the flow that could completely change how your family moves through the space.

Most people think hiring a designer is about having someone pick the pretty things. And yes — the finishes matter, the palette matters, the details matter. But that’s maybe 30% of what’s actually happening.

Beyond the ideas, there’s the coordination. Every decision in a renovation affects every other decision. The tile you choose affects the grout, which affects the cabinet tone, which affects the hardware finish, which affects the fixtures. When those decisions aren’t made together, with intention, you feel it in the final result — even if you can’t name exactly why.

My job is to make sure every element is resolved before anything is built, so the space holds together as a whole rather than a collection of individual choices.

So when someone asks me what a designer actually does — it’s this. It’s the fresh eyes, the cohesive thinking, the problem-solving before the problems happen, and the management that keeps everything on track.

This is not my usual content or what this page is about but I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished and there’s some overlap between my work and special interests so here goes.

I used the Mood Fabrics | Fabric & Sewing Valentina V-waist dress pattern to make my outfit for the DDA Canada gala. I took on an extremely complicated project as a sewist with just 2 months of proper sewing experience and I am sooo happy with how my outfit turned out.

I’m very honoured to have been recognized by DDA Canada for my work on Project Dream Home across two categories:

🏆 Bronze: Kitchens $50K to $100K
🏆 Bronze: Renovations under $200K

Side note: a few different of my “special interests” shone through last night, makeup being one of them. As a Bharatanatyam dancer, I will always choose a dramatic winged liner. Full glam slayed 11/10 🤩

There is beauty in simplicity; clean lines, muted colours, subtle finishes. Above all, there is beauty in functionality.

It is said that “form follows function” but I believe that form complements function. One cannot stand without the other because as visual creatures who prefer the path of least resistance, we want to look at beautiful things that also meet our needs.

In this breakfast nook, that is the exact balance I found. Through simple materials and finishes, I was able to create a space that has become the most functional spot in the house, at which the family spends 80% of its time.

The numbers behind renovation waste are too significant to ignore.

1. 27% of municipal solid waste in landfills comes from construction and demolition waste.
2. 75% of that material still had residual value at the time of disposal.
3. The global construction industry uses approximately 30% of all raw materials extracted and generates around 30% of the world’s waste
4. Embodied carbon from building materials is responsible for 11% of global emissions

When we replace perfectly good materials in a renovation, we trigger an entirely new production chain from nature to factory, and a logistics chain from factory to front door.

First impressions matter. As soon as you step into a home, you can get the vibe for the space and who lives there.

The entryway sets the tone for the rest of the space. It may be a dramatic entryway or something small and subtle, what matters are the details. This is usually subconscious; our brains immediately understand its importance.

A good entryway is also functional not just aesthetic so consider the following as you design your entryway:

1. A drop zone for keys, mail, and other things you need as you exit the house
2. A place to remove & store your outdoor shoes
3. A space to sit while you wear your shoes
4. Hooks or hangers to hang up coats
5. A rug to soften up the space
6. Sufficient lighting
7. Easily accessible light switches so that you’re not fumbling in the dark as you enter or exit the house.
8. Artwork, lamps, fresh flowers, snd any other details that brings you joy.

Your reminder that hiring a Designer doesn’t have to mean foregoing your style. A good designer is someone works with you to identify your design style and help you bring your vision to life, not impose their own wishes on you.
