May the 4th be with you!

This basement was designed for my client’s love for all things fantasy and sci fi. It went from a room that barely functioned to the family’s entertainment hub.

If you have a space that you think deserves to be more, let’s talk.

Not every design decision starts with a product list. Clients don’t generally walk in saying, “I want a natural quartzite with a soft taupe vein.” They describe a feeling: “I want it to be calm,” or “I want it to be warm, but definitely not beige.”

Design thinking can be abstract. Sometimes, I’ll get a vision in my mind triggered by something as random as coffee swirling into milk — and that becomes the anchor for an entire design.

My job is to take that sensory language and translate it into a technical reality. I bridge the gap between “I want it to feel like this” and the practical side of design: lighting, durability, and the technical specs that make a material actually work for your lifestyle.

If you’re in Durham Region or the GTA and you have a vision you can’t quite put into design language, that’s exactly what I’m here for. You don’t need the “right” words — you just need the vision. I’ll handle the rest.

Plot twist: your “second career” might be the one you were meant for all along 👀

Juliet Fernandez went from leading IT projects to designing dream homes — and building her own studio () from the ground up. Now she’s creating intentional, beautifully managed spaces across the GTA (without the chaos most renovations bring).

Off the clock? Think sourdough baking, yellow-loving energy, and getting back into Bharatanatyam — a creative outlet that keeps her grounded and inspired 💫

Her journey is real, relatable, and proof that you don’t have to have it all figured out to start.

If you’ve been dreaming about starting something new, this is your sign.

This family room is one of the features that drew us to this home. It already had a cozy, cottage vibe with wood beams on the ceiling, half-wall wood paneling, and a stone feature wall with a fireplace creating a very rustic finish. It had warmth, different textures, and a lot of natural light from the south-facing windows.

The wall from the kitchen to the family room was also open, allowing for a clear view into the space (and the TV on the far wall). But there was something missing. When I was planning the design, I knew I wanted to do something in here without changing too much of the original charm. That is when I leaned into my love for bold wallpaper.

By adding a stunning damask wallpaper that pulled from my color palette, I was able to bring in the richness I was craving; and interestingly, it added even more coziness. With the addition of some brass wall sconces, the design was complete. It was a simple upgrade that made a massive difference.

A key part of design we sometimes forget is restraint — knowing when to stop. I believe I achieved a certain elegance here by doing the least amount of “upgrading” possible.

Most of the stress people associate with construction actually stems from a lack of preparation during the pre-construction weeks.

When decisions are made under pressure while a contractor is standing in your hallway, they are rarely the right decisions for your budget or your long-term vision.

As a Designer and Project Manager, my goal during the initial phase is to eliminate guesswork. This is the stage of the project when we verify measurements, confirm lead times with vendors, and ensure that the design intent is properly defined. By the time we actually start demolition, we aren’t figuring it out as we go; we are simply executing a highly detailed roadmap that has already been vetted.

A managed timeline isn’t just about finishing on a specific date; it’s about ensuring the process feels controlled and professional from start to finish.

If you’re looking for a partner to help you navigate these complexities and turn a potentially chaotic renovation into a calculated success, I’d love to help you get started.

Ten Forward — the iconic crew lounge and social hub of USS Enterprise-D was designed to serve as a comforting sanctuary, a social centre for staff and crew members. With its wood accents, low lighting, and cozy atmosphere, it was the heart of interaction on the ship.

This basement renovation was designed with the exact same intention — to serve as a social hub, the bridge between family time and late-night entertaining. Our prime directive was to create a space that felt entirely theirs.

Much like its namesake, the focal point is the wood slat wall featuring what my client calls “funky lighting.” Beyond the aesthetics, this is a space that enshrines my client’s interests and hobbies. It’s no longer just a basement restored after a flood; it is finally the space they always wanted.

While the design was both exciting and challenging due to structural restrictions, working closely with the client allowed me to bring their vision to life. This photo by .ca truly capture the soul of the project and show exactly what is possible, even when navigating limited space and technical limitations.

When I was designing my kitchen, I knew that the stove wall was going to be the focal point. Electrical outlets are a functional necessity and required by code, but they are an eyesore. Especially when they break up the clean lines of a beautiful stone or tile installation.

My solution was to use power strips tucked discreetly under the upper cabinets (yes, this is up to code). This allowed me to have more outlets along that wall than required by code without compromising the focal point of this kitchen.

I wasn’t just being picky about aesthetics, I was protecting the investment. If you are spending thousands on premium tile or a custom slab, why would you want to disrupt it with outlets, even if they are high quality outlets?

This is the invisible side of design, the process of looking at a technical requirement and finding a way to make it work without compromising the beauty of the space. It takes more coordination with trades and a bit more planning upfront, but the result is a seamless, intentional finish that makes the whole room feel more elevated.

This is an example of beauty and function working together.

“How much for a new kitchen?”

It’s the most common question I get, and “it depends” is the only honest answer I can give.

In the world of 60-second home transformations, we’ve been conditioned to expect immediate answers. But a kitchen isn’t a product you buy off a shelf — it’s a construction project. The gap between a “face lift” and a “structural gut” is tens of thousands of dollars and months of labor.

My job isn’t just to pick finishes; it’s to help you define your scope before we start spending your money. Whether we are specifying trade-only custom cabinetry or a great find from Home Depot, the goal is the same: making sure your investment actually shows up in the daily function and long-term value of your home.

If you’re planning a renovation, stop looking for a “standard” price and start thinking about the scope of work.

The kitchen was the hero of Dream Home renovation — but this is the space that actually ties the main floor together.

The living and dining room share one open space, and when we were planning the renovation, we made a deliberate decision not to gut it. The bones were good but it needed an update and cohesion — something to make it feel like it belonged to the same home as everything else we were doing.

So we kept it cosmetic by adding new picture frame moulding below the existing chair rail, new paint to complement the kitchen, and adding new lighting and furniture. What this did was quietly unify the whole floor.

The moulding gave the walls architectural detail they were missing, the paint pulled the colour palette through from the kitchen and family room, and the furniture helped create a comfortable conversation and dining zone for more formal hosting.

Sometimes the biggest design impact comes from knowing what not to change — and making sure every decision you do make is intentional.

Ever feel like your home renovation is a series of guessing games? In the GTA’s fast-paced market, "winging it" is a recipe for stress and blown budgets.

At Inspired Spaces, we manage projects using two distinct tools:

The timeline shows the big picture and the Schedule is the micro-detail. My philosophy is straightforward — decisions is made on paper before a trade arrives on-site. This isn't just about aesthetics; it’s about professional rigour, protecting your budget, and even reducing your project’s carbon footprint (CO2e) through efficient logistics. 🌿
