Two of our illustrious Wildfire Unit artists will be performing their own work and blowing yr damn minds!

👹👹👹First up, Saturn Return written and performed by Ciarán Volke!👹👹👹
Saturn Return is a solo musical about a popstar who must travel the underworld to escape both literal and metaphorical demons.

🐣🐣🐣Followed up by Split Rites/Half made by Max Hanic and Ane Zapirain, performed by Max Hanic🐣🐣🐣
Split Rites/Half Made is a duet that explores notions of birth and death with specific reference to the creator’s having found an unborn chicken, half formed, within an egg they cracked open while making breakfast together. Through embodying states of extreme inbetween and an earnest exploration of funeral rituals the dancers move and voice between images of death and burgeoning life evoking a language of the strange, transformation, the grotesque and the uncomfortable in between.

Our second participant of the Wildfire Development Unit is Ciaran Volke and his play Saturn Return!

Ciarán Volke is a performer, writer, and director based in Mohkinstsis and Treaty 7. He is known for the comedy duo COWBOY, as well as being the co-founder of the award winning theatre company Three Cheese. He has created and performed all across the country, with companies such as the Belfry, Theatre SKAM, Intrepid Theatre, Atomic Vaudeville, Impulse Theatre, Downstage Theatre, Blue Bridge Theatre, Paper Street Theatre, and Ok Dope. He has a BFA in Performance from the University of Victoria.

Saturn Return is a solo musical about a popstar who must travel the underworld to escape both literal and metaphorical demons. Throughout his journey, other stories are braided into a panoply of grief, fame, and q***rness. Development for this project began on Instagram in 2020, and then in residency with Intrepid Theatre’s OUTstages Residency. It has been presented twice over the course of its initial residency and subsequent reworkings, and is in its final push to being complete.

Welcome to the unit, Ciaran!

Introducing our first Wildfire Development Unit participant, Autumn Strom and her play “Hold Me Under”! Autumn Strom (she/they) is a transfem, multidisciplinary theatre artist based in
amiskwaciwâskahikan. Autumn is a graduate of the University of Alberta’s BFA in Acting program, and is particularly interested in new work processes, as well as any work that explores gender through a q***r lens. In addition to acting, Autumn’s artistic practice includes sound design, stage management, and playwriting. She is also a member of Rapid Fire Theatre’s Main Performing Ensemble.

“Hold Me Under” is about a woman digging in the garden. At nighttime. In her ex-girlfriend’s backyard. It’s about the intimacy of encountering a person you loved and might still love and absolutely cannot love. It’s about reaching under the surface and warping the flesh into something new. It’s about turning into an earthworm because maybe that’s the only way to
make sense of anything.

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO APPLY FOR TWO EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES!

Apply for the Wildfire Development Unit if you have a piece that you’d like development support with, specifically if it’s interdisciplinary in nature, blending theatre creation with other art forms!

Apply for the Emerging Producer in Residence position if you have an interest in learning more about how to create and produce your own independent work!

Joseph McManus, one of our producers in residence for 2024/2025, had this to say about spending time with us last season:

“This program is a perfect launchpad for an emerging artist or producer. I got to receive priceless mentorship about not only past work, but also got a glimpse into current company operations, creating a well-rounded and relevant experience. The best part of this past year has been getting the opportunity to develop closer professional relationships with the folks I looked up to in my teens, and having them support my current projects through advice and connecting me with other theatre professionals is like a dream come true. These lil guys are the best!”

Thanks Joseph!

Deadline for applications is TONIGHT at 11:59pm.

For more information about either program, check out our website at mmmtheatrecollective.com and head to the Get Involved section.

ONLY THREE MORE DAYS TO APPLY FOR THE WILDFIRE DEVELOPMENT UNIT!

Apply if have a piece that you’d like development support on, specifically if it’s interdisciplinary in nature and blends theatre creation with other art forms!

Shyanne Duquette, a participant in our 2023/2024 Wildfire Unit has this to say about their experience developing their piece SKNHEAD:

“Working with Geoff and the MMMC team through Wildfire completely changed how I approach writing. It was a supportive environment that trusted my voice while challenging my work in all the right ways. I also love how collaborative it felt! The team invests in your process, not your product. SKNHEAD wouldn’t be where it is now without that process. MMMC helped me find the core of my play, building it with care, time, and community.”

Thank you for sharing, Shyanne!

Deadline for applications is Monday, November 3rd, 2025, at 11:59pm.

For more information, and to check out our call for our Emerging Producer in Residence position, check out our website at mmmtheatrecollective.com and head to the Get Involved section.

Do you have a project you want to share with the world but you don’t know how?
Do you have a burning desire to produce theatre but you’re not sure where to start?

The Major Matt Mason Collective is recruiting an emerging theatre artist for an artistic producing mentorship position! This year-long mentorship program is targeted to support an early-career Alberta-based theatre artist with an interest in creating and producing their own work.

Sophie Healey, one of our outgoing mentees from the past year, had this to say about their experience:

“I greatly enjoyed my time as an emerging producer-in-residence. As an early career artist who produces their own work, is incredibly valuable to get to see the inner machinery of a theatre collective. Thanks to this program, I’m much less intimidated at the prospect of writing grants, outreach, creating a budget, marketing a show, and getting from point A (ideas) to point B (execution)!”

Deadline to apply for this position and for our Wildfire Development Unit is this coming Monday, November 3rd, only five days away, so apply soon if you’re interested.

For more information about either opportunity please visit our website at mmmtheatrecollective.com and go to the Get Involved section!
