There’s something pretty great about watching a piece come together in the hands of someone who’s been doing this for decades.

Your weekly dose of colour 🌈

Round two! This week we went bright — cobalt blue, silver, light green, pink, orange, yellow and light blue. Swipe to see the palette! šŸ‘‰

There’s something extremely satisfying about watching all those rings of colour spread across the marbling tray. And the best part? You never quite know what you’re going to get until the leather comes out.

Which colour would you have added first?

TOOL TIP TUESDAY: OVERSTITCHERS 🧵

Good hand-stitching starts with good spacing!

An overstitcher rolls along your stitch line to mark evenly spaced reference points; most commonly used as a guide when making your holes with an awl or single chisel.

Our current set comes with four interchangeable wheels: 5, 6, 7 & 8 stitches per inch, so you can choose the spacing that works best for your leather and your project.

Simple tool. Satisfyingly even stitches. šŸ‘Š

Custom order heading to Calgary! āœˆļø

This customer spotted our Carry-On Duffel but wanted to make it their own — a different leather colour and a slightly taller bag for a little extra room.

And honestly, this is our favourite kind of custom order!

Rather than starting completely from scratch, we love taking one of our existing designs and tweaking it to suit what you need — changing the dimensions, leather, colour, hardware or other details while keeping the bones of a design we already know works.

For this one, we went with a beautiful warm terracotta leather, rich brown bridle leather straps and antique brass hardware. šŸ˜

Finished off with our gold Tundra Leather stamp, and now it’s officially on its way to Calgary!

šŸŽØ YOUR WEEKLY DOSE OF COLOUR | No. 01

A little marbling inspiration to brighten up your feed!

This week’s colour inspiration comes from one of our students during a leather marbling class!

One of my favourite things about teaching these classes is seeing the colour combinations and techniques everyone comes up with. Sometimes the results are completely unexpected, and that’s half the fun!

Swipe to check out the colour palette behind this one! šŸ‘‰

A little behind-the-scenes from the workshop! šŸ¤Ž

Cutting, gluing, stitching, finishing… there are a whole lot of steps that go into making something by hand.

Most days I’m behind the computer, but SOME days I’m at the workbench. This is definitely the more fun option. šŸ˜‚

Tool Tip Tuesday: Marbling Leather 101 šŸŽØ

Marbling leather looks a little bit like magic, but you actually don’t need a ton of specialized equipment to get started!

Here are some of the basics we use:

Carrageenan — mixed with water to create the thickened substance that allows your colours to float on the surface.

Measuring spoons — ratios matter when you’re mixing your size!

Squeeze bottles — handy for mixing, storing and applying your colours.

Funnel — because getting liquids into tiny squeeze bottles without one is… not fun. šŸ˜‚

Combs + awl — used to move through the floating colours and create different patterns. And yes, some of our ā€œspecialized marbling toolsā€ are repurposed hair combs!

Marbling tray — nothing fancy required. Ours is essentially a shallow cookie tray that’s large enough for the pieces we marble.

There’s a little more to marbling than having the right supplies, though. Your ratios, paint preparation, application and technique all play a part in getting a good result.

Want to learn the specifics? That’s exactly what we get into in our Marbling Class! You’ll learn the process from start to finish and leave with your own marbled leather Traveller Journal. Stay tuned for more details on class launch (it’ll be the last week of October!).

Another marbling class, another round of inspiration! šŸŽØ

One of my favourite things about teaching our leather marbling classes is seeing what everyone comes up with. Every class, someone tries a new colour combination or swirling technique that I never would have thought of!

This last class inspired me so much that I came back the very next day and spent some time experimenting on my own. I tried out a few of our students’ techniques, played around with adding more pigment, and had SO much fun seeing how everything turned out!

And here are the results! šŸ˜

These new marbled leather panels are available in-store and online at tundraleather.ca.

I can’t wait to see what YOU make with them!

10 YEARS! 🤯

We’ve been making leather cases for Daneson Ltd. for so long that I had to dig through our old receipts to figure out when we started. The oldest one I could find? 2016!

Each case is made right here in our workshop using natural vegetable-tanned leather, then hand-moulded and embossed.

And the best part? That beautiful natural leather develops an incredible patina over time. It’s one of those products that genuinely gets better with age.
