💜 The History of Colour: Tyrian Purple

For thousands of years, Tyrian Purple was more than a colour—it was a symbol of extraordinary wealth, power, and status.

Originating with the ancient Phoenicians along the Mediterranean coast, this legendary dye was produced from secretions obtained from certain species of murex sea snails. Producing even a small amount required enormous quantities of snails and a painstaking process, making the resulting purple exceptionally rare and expensive.

Its value became so closely associated with power that Tyrian Purple was worn by emperors, kings, and other members of society's highest ranks. In ancient Rome and later Byzantium, the colour became particularly associated with imperial authority—helping give rise to purple's enduring connection with royalty.

🐚 Did you know? Thousands of murex snails could be required to produce enough dye for a relatively small amount of richly coloured fabric. The remarkable dye could range from reddish-purple to a deep violet depending on how it was prepared and exposed to light.

Today, we no longer need thousands of sea snails to enjoy these magnificent purples. Modern artists' colours recreate similar rich violet and purple hues with contemporary pigments.

From the shores of ancient Phoenicia to the robes of emperors, Tyrian Purple remains one of history's most legendary colours.

💙 The History of Colour: Prussian Blue

Sometimes the most important discoveries happen completely by accident.

Prussian Blue emerged in Berlin in the early 18th century when a colour maker was attempting to produce a red pigment. Instead, an unexpected chemical reaction created an intense, deep blue unlike anything artists had been able to obtain so affordably before.

The new pigment quickly spread across Europe and beyond. Artists embraced it for its strength, depth, and versatility—and its influence eventually reached Japan, where imported Prussian Blue became particularly important to ukiyo-e printmakers. Katsushika Hokusai famously used the pigment in his celebrated series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Prussian Blue helped transform the artist's palette. Unlike costly blues made from materials such as lapis lazuli, it could be manufactured, making a powerful blue accessible to far more artists.

🎂 Happy Birthday, Andy Warhol (1928–1987)

Andy Warhol was an American artist, filmmaker, and printmaker who became the leading figure of Pop Art. By transforming everyday consumer products and celebrity images into works of art, Warhol challenged traditional ideas about culture, fame, and creativity.

Using techniques such as silkscreen printing, Warhol created some of the most recognizable images in modern art, including Campbell's Soup Cans and his colourful portraits of Marilyn Monroe. His work blurred the line between fine art and popular culture, influencing generations of artists, designers, and advertisers.

Warhol's studio, known as The Factory, became a creative hub where artists, musicians, and filmmakers collaborated, helping define the cultural landscape of the 1960s and beyond.

🎂 Happy Birthday, Tom Thomson (1877–1917)

Tom Thomson was a pioneering Canadian landscape painter whose bold depictions of the wilderness helped shape the future of Canadian art. Although he passed away before the formation of the Group of Seven, his innovative style and deep appreciation for nature profoundly influenced its members.

Working primarily in oil and sketching en plein air, Thomson spent countless hours exploring Ontario's forests, lakes, and rivers—especially in and around Algonquin Provincial Park. His expressive brushwork and vibrant colours captured the changing moods of the Canadian landscape with remarkable energy and emotion.

Among his most celebrated works are The Jack Pine and The West Wind, two iconic paintings that have become enduring symbols of Canada's artistic heritage.

💛 The History of Colour: Indian Yellow

Brilliant, warm, and glowing with golden light, Indian Yellow has fascinated artists for centuries.

Its origins are surrounded by one of art history's most intriguing stories. According to historical accounts, the original pigment was produced in India from the urine of cows fed almost exclusively on mango leaves—a practice that was eventually banned due to concerns for the animals' welfare. While historians continue to debate aspects of this story, it remains one of the most famous legends in the history of artists' pigments.

Loved for its luminous transparency and rich golden glow, Indian Yellow became a favourite for painting sunlight, landscapes, fabrics, and warm skin tones. Today, the original pigment is no longer produced, but modern formulations faithfully recreate its beautiful colour using safe, synthetic pigments.
