💚 The History of Colour: Viridian Green

Cool, luminous, and unmistakably elegant—Viridian Green brought a fresh new green to the 19th-century artist’s palette.

Developed during a period of remarkable advances in colour chemistry, Viridian is a hydrated chromium oxide pigment, commonly identified by the Colour Index PG18. Its rich blue-green character, transparency, and permanence gave artists an exciting alternative to some of the less stable or more hazardous greens that had come before it.

Viridian became particularly valuable for landscape painting. Its cool undertone made it beautifully suited to foliage, water, shadows, and atmospheric passages—and its transparent nature allowed artists to build delicate glazes and subtle layers of colour.

🎨 Did you know? Viridian is an exceptionally useful mixing colour. Combine it with yellows for a wide variety of natural greens, warm it with earth colours, or pair it with reds to create sophisticated neutrals and darks.

Its arrival during the 19th century also coincided with an extraordinary period of experimentation in painting, and Viridian found its way onto the palettes of artists looking for brighter, cleaner colours with dependable permanence.

🎉 October 6 | Romero Britto

🎂 Happy Birthday, Romero Britto (born 1963)!

Bright colours, playful patterns, hearts, animals, and energetic lines—Romero Britto’s artwork is almost impossible to look at without smiling!

Born in Recife, Brazil, Britto developed an interest in art at a young age. Largely self-taught, he began experimenting with painting and drawing before eventually moving to Miami, Florida, where his career grew internationally.
Britto’s style is instantly recognizable.

His paintings and sculptures combine vivid colour, bold outlines, geometric shapes, and repeated patterns. His imagery often includes animals, people, flowers, hearts, and everyday objects, which he transforms into joyful, highly stylized compositions.

His work has been associated with Pop Art and Neo-Pop, while also showing influences from Cubism and other modern art movements. Britto takes recognizable subjects and breaks them into simplified shapes, patterns, and areas of colour.

One of the recurring themes in Britto’s art is optimism. His work often celebrates love, happiness, friendship, and the simple pleasures of life.

His art has appeared in galleries, public spaces, advertising campaigns, and collaborations with major international brands. He has also created large-scale public sculptures and installations.

A little art history lesson: Britto demonstrates how artists can take influences from earlier movements and combine them with contemporary popular culture to create an instantly recognizable personal style.

His work also shows that fine art doesn't always have to be serious or sombre. Colour, pattern, humour, and happiness can be artistic subjects too!

Britto once said, “Art is too important not to share.”

🎉 October 2 | Annie Leibovitz

🎂 Happy Birthday, Annie Leibovitz (born 1949)!

A photograph can do more than capture a moment—it can tell a story, reveal a personality, or create an entirely imagined world. Few photographers have explored this idea as memorably as Annie Leibovitz, one of the most widely recognized portrait photographers of our time.

Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, Leibovitz initially studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute before discovering her passion for photography. In 1970, while still a student, she began working for Rolling Stone magazine. She became its chief photographer in 1973, photographing musicians, cultural figures, and major events.

📸 In 1983, Leibovitz joined Vanity Fair, later working regularly with Vogue. Her work expanded into fashion photography and elaborate editorial portraits featuring actors, musicians, athletes, writers, artists, and public figures.

✨ What makes her photography distinctive?

Leibovitz often combines careful composition, expressive lighting, thoughtful poses, and storytelling. Rather than simply photographing a subject as they appear, she frequently creates a setting that communicates something about their personality, public image, or the story being told.

Her photographs range from intimate, candid moments to elaborate, theatrical scenes. She has also documented everyday life, landscapes, cultural events, and personal experiences.

Leibovitz’s work is a great example of the meeting point between portraiture, photojournalism, fashion, and visual storytelling.
