Hannah and I selected a few recipes with long stretches of inactivity — the perfect amount of time to stay near the kitchen, and hunker down with a good movie in between.

Beef Cheeks, from Garde Manger by Chuck Hughes . These take hours to become unctuous — enjoy the languorous The Taste of Things, a seductive film about cooking & authorship.

Mango Kulfi from Smoke, Rice Water: a Satyajit Ray double bill — while the kulfi freezes, watch The Big City. Churn & watch The Music Room while the kulfi sets. You’ll need the sweet treat to wipe away any existential dread.

Roasted Chicken Shoyu with all the fixins, from Homemade Ramen by Sho Spaeth . Okay, it’s on the nose but have you seen Tampopo lately? It feels like a new movie every time you see it.

Pavlova with strawberries, lychees & lime, from Nik Sharma | Food Science Fundamentals of Flavour. While your meringue firms up, Hannah suggests The Red Shoes, a Powell & Pressburger confection.

An escarole torte, from Radicchio. Enjoy a slice after taking in Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow, a three-part comedy from neorealist maestro Vittoria De Sica.

Panade, from Andrew Janjigian in All That Crumbs Allow. This dish requires patience — and I can think of no better film than A Man Escaped. Bresson’s finest, and that’s saying something A LOT.

Seeing the movie Life is Beautiful when it came out was a big moment. I was absolutely delighted by it, but also, questioned if my enjoyment was appropriate. Thirty years later, it’s a resounding YES: enjoy life, see all the movies, keep listening & learning AND make food fun.
