A warm welcome back to our dear friend Marimekko, in the shop (and online) after a too-long hiatus. Poppies, blooby dots & wavy stripes are our love language. Ceramics, kitchen linens & one groovy pitcher — with more to come.

This book is cool — not a word we use w***y nilly. It is by no means the only word we’re assigning to God is a Pickle: how about practical, seasonal, ego-less, gorgeous & rare. It’s one of very few Czech cookbooks in English, and although much of it’s focus is on preserves & pickles, it also offers a cross-section of tempting recipes using preserves, and wonderful stories about the people & places it documents. Yes, it’s $$ but if you’re in the market for such a book, you’ll have no regrets.

Guest what World Cup fans, we’re always ready for you. Our favourite section in Good Egg is devoted to the best food around the world — and we love seeing our customers’ expressions when they spot a familiar family recipe. It’s weird not to include any Italian cookbooks, but that’s how the cookie crumbles. Most other competing nations are represented here, though OBVIOUSLY Canada is going to win (in our hearts).

Whether you’re lucky enough to globetrot or not, narrative cookbooks are the most fun guides to the world that we can think of. While they typically focus on food preparation, they’re also conduits to local ingredients, language, traditions & daily life. We love seeing more & more of these!

Fire up the grills, kids: IT’S CONTEST TIME, Matty Edition.

We have all three of Matty Matheson’s excellent & fun books, signed by the very nice chef himself. One lucky person will win them all PLUS a Lodge cast iron pan to fry up the proverbial bacon.

This can be you! To enter, please do all the things — FOLLOW us, LIKE this postie-post & TAG three of your nearest & dearest (or anyone who will tolerate it). Multiple entries are welcome.

The winner will be chosen at random on Monday morning & will need to pick up their loot in person, at their leisure.

Prize Value: Priceless. Bonne chance!

It’s a simple enough idea: invite a bunch of bakers to each make a cake. Pack them all up, along with picnic blankets & thermoses of tasty drinks. Sample all the cakes, until everyone goes home giddy from buttercream. It’s a thing. And this is your guide to a successful cake picnic party. This lovely baking book is also a guide to just making gorgeous cakes that you can eat any way that you like — perhaps shared with a neighbour or coworkers. Or, have your cake and eat it too. I think there’s some sort of prize for that. Vive les gateaux! Nice book.

Go ahead and eat panko-crusted hort dorgs & viennoiserie filled to the brim with pastry cream. BUT make sure to get some nutrition in between: whole grain, veg, a little ferment. Here are some excellent tomes to inspire a healthy balance.

Toronto is Festival City, and as much as we generally like parties with music, food & merriment — it’s really hard to run a bookshop in the midst of it all. So this year, we will be closed for the first few Pedestrian Sunday Kensington festivals. Enjoy the illegal vendors, loud djs & high-fructose corn syrup drinks without us.

Get your pans & grills hot, your salt at the ready, and your marbled beef resting. It’s steak n’ salad season, if you dig. N.B. Steak Zine is a pocket-sized offshoot of Cake Zine… and it’s brilliant.
