For those doing RVI/NDT work: how do you handle measurement after finding an internal defect? 🔎

That’s the problem the FIBERSCOPE iX3D was designed to address.
It combines video borescope inspection with stereo-based 2D and 3D measurement, so an inspector can locate a defect and then measure its length, depth, height, distance or area without dismantling the component.

One feature we find particularly useful is measurement verification. iX3D creates a 360° 3D model showing the surface and measurement points. You can rotate and zoom the model to check where the points were placed. A color depth map helps visualize surface geometry, while areas without enough 3D data for measurement are marked in red.
There are six measurement methods, including Point to Point, Point to Line, Point to Plane, Multipoint, Max Point to Line and Plane.
The system also has interchangeable 0° and 90° stereo probes, 4 mm and 6 mm diameter options, four-way articulation, and working lengths up to 7.5 m.
According to the iX3D documentation, a measurement can be obtained in less than one minute.

Both cables are 5,5 mm thick. So why does the professional system cost more?
Because cable diameter is only one specification—and often not the most important one.
Inside an actual drain line, the push cable must balance flexibility with control. It may need to navigate P-traps, back-to-back 90° bends, and other challenging transitions without prematurely ending the inspection.
This comparison shows how two cables of the same diameter can behave very differently because of their construction.

An entry-grade system may cost less upfront. But for a working technician, the more useful comparison includes:
• The applications the cable can access
• Its behaviour through tight bends
• Operator control during the inspection
• The potential cost of interrupted work or cable replacement

Finding a problem inside a deep well is helpful, but recording where it appears makes your inspection more useful.
FIBERSCOPE has introduced an optional tripod-mounted meter counter for STRAHL well-camera inspections, including the STRAHL HDL deep-well and borehole camera.
The tripod sits above the well opening, providing a steady platform for feeding and measuring the cable. As the camera cable moves through, the counter tracks how much has been used so you can match your images or video with a depth reference.
The system divides the work into four clear functions:
• The motorized winch manages cable deployment and retrieval
• The tripod guides the cable into the well
• The counter provides a deployed-length reference
• The recorded footage documents what was observed at that depth
This accessory is especially helpful if you cannot place the reel above the casing, if space is tight, or if you need to record several findings at different depths.
For shallow inspections with direct reel alignment, manual guidance, and the winch alone may be sufficient. Note: The counter only gives a cable-depth reference, not a surveyed elevation or precise defect measurement. Operators should set the starting point and note any difference from the top of the casing.

You found a blockage on the screen. Now comes the harder question: Is it 20 feet away—or 100?

The cable drum may stay above ground, but it can determine how efficiently the sewer inspection goes.

A drum frame must remain stable while crews deploy and retrieve hundreds of feet of tether. At the same time, it must be practical to move between a service vehicle, a maintenance hole, a culvert, or a remote stormwater access point.
TROGLOTREK’s cable drum now has a new frame—and the system has kept the portability that makes it useful for mobile inspection teams.
The reel carries 984 ft (300 m) of 4 mm Kevlar-reinforced cable. Because power is supplied by batteries on the system rather than through a heavy power tether, the cable weighs only about 19 kg per kilometre—approximately 5.7 kg for the full 300m length.
