Forget Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense. We may have found the greatest Danish place name of all time:

Flötröf.

Yes, it really appears on this map of Funen from 1718.

Near Hindevad, the map marks a house with the name “Flötröf”, which translates surprisingly well into modern Danish as “flyt røven”. Or, in English: “move your ass.”

The house itself was apparently known by its owners as Hindevad-huset, leading Museum Odense curator Peder Dam to suggest that Flötröf may have been a slightly less affectionate name used by the neighbours.

More than 300 years later, the house is gone.

The recently rediscovered map is fascinating for plenty of more respectable historical reasons too. It shows the royal cavalry district around and west of Odense and preserves roads, settlements, place names and landscape details that have since disappeared.

But let’s face it.
We put it in our collection for history.
We fell in love with it because of Flötröf. 😄

Few painters could make an empty room feel as alive as Vilhelm Hammershøi.

Born in Copenhagen in 1864, Hammershøi became famous for his quiet interiors: pale walls, muted greys, open doors, simple furniture and the soft Nordic light entering through a window. His wife Ida appears in many of them, often turned away from us.

For years, their apartment at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen became almost a world of its own in his paintings. The same rooms appear again and again, changed by light, furniture, people and perspective.

Here are five of Hammershøi’s interiors that we especially love:

- Dust Motes Dancing in Sunbeams (1900)
Perhaps his most famous interior. No people, almost no furniture. Just an empty room at Strandgade 30 and sunlight streaming through the window, catching the dust in the air.

- Interior with Ida Playing the Piano
Ida sits at the piano, seen from behind. Even with someone playing music, the room seems almost completely silent.

- Interior with Young Woman Seen from the Back (1904)
Again we see Ida with her face hidden from us. It is one of Hammershøi’s most characteristic motifs, creating a strange sense of intimacy and distance at the same time.

- Interior from the Home of the Artist (1901)
A single figure occupies an otherwise restrained room. Walls, doors, light and empty space become as important as the person herself.

- Interior. The Music Room, Strandgade 30 (1908)
Musical instruments fill the room, yet no one is playing them. The piano, violin and cello seem to be waiting, while daylight enters quietly from the side.

There is something about Hammershøi’s rooms that still feels remarkably modern more than a century later. Perhaps it is their simplicity. Perhaps the light. Or perhaps it is everything he chooses not to show.

What is hiding beneath the still water?

The Water Sprite — also known as Nøkken — was created by Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen in 1904.

With only two glowing eyes above the surface, the artwork captures the quiet mystery of Scandinavian folklore.

Madonna is not just one Munch image.

Edvard Munch returned to this motif again and again.
That was typical for him.
He often worked with the same subject in different versions, changing the mood through colour, line, and texture.

With Madonna, the changes feel quiet, but powerful.
The closed eyes.
The flowing hair.
The red halo-like shape around the head.
It feels both sacred and sensual.

MUNCH Museum notes that there are five painted versions of Madonna, and Munch also made graphic versions of the motif.

We have two Madonna posters in the collection: one connected to MUNCH, and one connected to the National Museum in Oslo.

Same motif.
Different presence.

A strong choice if you want Norwegian art with depth, silence, and tension on the wall.

The Scream is not just one image.

Edvard Munch returned to this motif several times.

Munch often made different versions of the same subject, changing colour, line, texture, and mood.

With The Scream, you can feel that clearly.

The 1893 painted version has the raw, burning sky many people know.
The 1893 pastel feels more textured and direct.
The 1895 pastel is sharper, brighter, and almost graphic.
The 1910 painted version feels cooler, darker, and more controlled.

It is the same scream.
But not the same feeling.

He did not just paint what he saw.
He painted how a moment can change inside the mind.
