As part of a recent hallway redesign, this smaller downstairs bathroom was given a fresh new look to feel more connected to the rest of the home.

The existing traditional features already gave the room plenty of character, so the focus was on working with what was there rather than changing everything. A warmer palette, softer pattern and more considered finishes helped open up the space and give it a more polished, cohesive feel.

Small rooms can make a big impact, especially when they’re designed as part of the wider flow of a home.

There are parts of being an interior designer that you simply can’t learn from a textbook.

Building relationships with brilliant, reliable tradespeople is one of them.

A recent client shared this as part of her review of Verano Interiors:

“Julie has a great roster of tradespeople who worked to impeccable standards, as well as many local businesses which supplied many of the products / features.”

That meant a lot to me because the people who help bring my designs to life are such an important part of Verano Interiors.

You can specify a beautiful finish or draw something down to the millimetre, but ultimately you need skilled people who understand the vision and care about the standard of their work.

Over the years, I’ve built relationships with tradespeople, craftspeople and local suppliers whose work I trust enough to recommend to my clients.

That network comes from experience: seeing people’s work first-hand, understanding how they operate and knowing who is right for a particular job.

It’s an important part of what clients are investing in when they work with an experienced interior designer.

I’m in love with this concept!

The background paint colour is Benjamin Moore Vintage Vogue, paired with black walnut flooring and the most beautiful Persian rug. I’ve used a BoConcept dining table and chairs, with a dark bronze mirror and matching dark bronze detailing throughout — including the wall lights and chandelier.

To really set the scene, I’d add an oversized ornate cornice and wainscoting to the walls, with plenty of dark bronze details to bring everything together.

I feel I now need to go and redecorate my own dining room!

One of the most widely used principles in interior design is the rule of odd numbers.

Arranging decorative objects in groups of three or five creates a composition that feels more natural, balanced and visually engaging than perfectly symmetrical groupings. Varying the height, texture and scale of each piece adds depth while allowing every object to complement the next.

Whether styling a coffee table, shelving or a console, this simple approach brings a sense of effortless cohesion to a space without making it feel overly curated.

The impact of thoughtful design is often felt long before it’s noticed.

It’s found in the way natural light moves effortlessly through a room, how spaces flow from one to the next, and how carefully considered details make everyday routines feel just a little easier. These are the qualities that rarely demand attention, yet shape the experience of living in a home.

The most successful interiors don’t simply look beautiful. They enhance the way you live, creating spaces that feel intuitive, welcoming and enduring long after the design is complete.

This living room has to be one of my favourite transformations to date - and one of those projects where I didn’t want to leave when it was finished!

The brief was to create a room that felt warm, sophisticated and very much ‘them’, while giving their whisky and artwork collections the space they deserved.

The existing alcove cabinets were completely ripped out and redesigned from scratch. We created bespoke cabinetry with beautiful marble worktops, plenty of storage and space for the whisky collection to grow — and, most importantly, somewhere to pour a dram and enjoy it!

I absolutely love how the clients’ artwork brings colour and personality into the room. The russet wallpaper inside the back of the whisky cabinets adds another layer and catches the light beautifully, while the sophisticated charcoal blue walls work so well with the existing curtains and oak flooring. Warm camel tones were then introduced to complement the blue and bring warmth into the scheme.

The finishing touch was the lighting. Dimmable wall lights allow the mood to change throughout the day, from bright and welcoming to warm and atmospheric - exactly what you want from a room like this.

And the best bit? The clients absolutely love it. Seeing how much they enjoy the room, and knowing it feels completely personal to them, is what makes all those little design decisions worthwhile.

For many families, today marks the return of school routines.

As life settles back into its familiar rhythm, it’s often the little things around the home that begin to stand out. The kitchen that feels increasingly difficult to navigate at mealtimes. The bedrooms that no longer offer quite enough space. The storage that has gradually become harder to keep on top of.

The spaces that worked so well a few years ago doesn’t always evolve as your family does.

The return to routine has a way of bringing those frustrations into focus, but it also offers the opportunity to imagine something different.
