Made in Staffordshire this green glazed earthenware “squirrel” jug is attributed to the Sylvac range of woodland and animal themed pieces first introduced in the 1930s and made through in to the 1950’s. The body of this piece takes the form of an acorn but the main feature is the nicely modelled squirrel climbing the side of the jug. Not rare but very collectible nevertheless!

THE GOLF BALL
Running a small antiques shop in the Highlands of Scotland tourist hot spot is fun - most of the time! We meet loads of interesting folk from all over the world and the majority are nice. BUT some of the people who come in to the shop can be very challenging and test our patience to the limit!!

Some time ago I inherited a box of good quality usable golf balls and not being a player myself they’ve sat on a shelf in the garage for ages. A couple of weeks ago I took a load of them in to the shop and put them in a bowl with a card saying 4 for a £1. They’ve sold quite well. On Saturday a bloke and two women came in at closing time and made a beeline for the bowl. They spent the next 10 minutes examining ALL the balls in the bowl and finally one of the women came forward with one ball and placed it on the counter. I told her they were four for a pound. “I know” she said “but I only want one!” “That will be a pound” I said! After making some grumpy remark she and her compatriots walked out of the shop!!! ARGH!!!!!

Here’s another novelty piece of commemorative ware - this time a running cup made by the Staffordshire firm of Carltonware to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. Quercky eh?!

Here we have a beautifully crafted and unusual pair of cast brass bells made to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in 1953. The bells at the abbey certainly rang out that day and these commemoratives would have chimed with many as a perfect souvenir!
