Previously displayed on our stand at a CADA fair, these two exceptional 17th-century beakers offer a fascinating insight into European silver.

On the left, a Dutch silver ‘Stakan’ beaker, Amsterdam, 1636. 'Stakan' so called because of its Russian style, it is marked for Amsterdam with the maker’s mark of a lion, attributed to Jan van de Velde.

On the right, a silver-gilt Strasbourg ‘Magistrate’s’ beaker, 1693. The council of Strasbourg consisted of members elected from the local towns within their control; the members were presented with these beakers as a symbol of their office.

An extremely rare silver gilt Bratina/tumbler cup from southern Germany, circa 1600.

It has an inscription around the top in gothic script which loosely translates as “Drink me up, and put me on the ground, I will stand up, so that you can refill me, Year 1602”. These type of cups originated in Russia and Scandinavian; this piece being from Southern Germany, we think it most likely that it was commissioned as a gift to a friend in the North.

A rock crystal locket, mounted with gold and enamels. Italian or Spanish, 17th century.

There are 9 small indentations carved within the rock crystal, possibly for reliquaries, but more likely we think to store ‘shrimp stones’. These are natural secretions from crustaceans which were used as a medicine to treat stomach and eye ailments. Their medicinal qualities were discovered in the Middle Ages, and continued to be sold in pharmacies till as recently as the last century. A very rare and unusual piece.

An extremely rare and unusual silver filigree toilet box, German, c. 1700.

Of circular design, standing on three little bun feet; set within the box are four finely engraved silver gilt plaques of a much earlier date, c.1580.

Probably Nuremberg; these plaques depict stories from Noah’s Ark and, with some subtle variations are based on woodcuts by the Swiss-born artist Jost Amman. Jost Amman moved to Nuremberg in 1560 and lived and worked there until his death in 1591.
