SUMMER BEDDING. So we’ve reached that point in the year where the Supermarkets and DIY stores are now selling Summer bedding plants - if you are in the South of England then that’s fine - in Scotland, it’s nuts and at least 3 weeks too early! In short - please don’t take horticultural advice from either DIY stores or Supermarkets as they’re only driven by sales and not when it’s the right time seasonally to plant!
Indeed, constantly you’ll find that if you leave off planting in Scotland till May month, then these plants will perform way better than the early planted ones - that’s if the the early ones weren’t frosted during some of these chilly nights that will surely yet come. Tomato/Cucumber/Peppers etc if getting bought at the moment will need a heated greenhouse to avoid them getting chilled, as if this happens these plants will never really recover from this. Veg plants and starting to appear and they should be ok to plant out, though if it was a particularly cool evening I’d throw some fleece over them just to be on the safe side.
Most local Garden Centres are full of lovely potted Spring bulbs, Alpines, Herbaceous plants and Spring flowering shrubs, along with Pansies and Violas - better still, you’ll always get sound advice in and from them.
Moyness is always happy to see both customers and those just browsing- drop in and see us from 8.00am-5.00pm or call us on 01250873135.
Take care. Ben
