The right blind for each room

Your bedroom, kitchen, and living room all have different needs from a window blind. And getting this right is one of those home styling details that makes everyday life noticeably better.

Bedroom → blackout blinds, every time. Pair it with blackout curtains if you really need full darkness.

Kitchen → wipe clean, moisture resistant, light colours. Practical first, pretty second.

Bathroom → same rules as the kitchen. Nothing too decorative in a small space.

What "made to measure" actually means?

"Made to measure" gets used a lot in home interiors, so it's worth being clear about what you're paying for.

A ready made blind comes in standard widths. You buy the nearest size and make it work. That usually means accepting small gaps at the sides, trimming the fabric, or just settling for a fit that's almost right.

A made to measure roller blind is cut to your exact dimensions. You give us the width and drop, we make it to those numbers. It sits flush in the recess or neatly over the frame without any gaps or compromises.

The price difference is often smaller than people expect. And once you've had a blind that actually fits your window properly, it's hard to go back.

Why your curtains might not be hanging right?

If your curtains look a bit off, three things worth checking:

1. Length of the pole. It should extend around 15 to 20cm past the window frame on each side. This lets the curtains stack back cleanly when open, so they're not eating into your glass.

2. Number of brackets. For many poles over 200cm, a centre bracket is included in the set to prevent sagging. It sounds obvious but it's the most common thing people skip, and it's very obvious once the curtains go up.

3. Height of the fitting. Fitting the pole higher than the top of the frame — even just 10cm makes the window look taller and lets in more light when the curtains are open. One of those curtain styling tricks that costs nothing but changes everything.

How to choose the right curtain pole diameter?

The thing nobody tells you when you're buying a curtain pole: the diameter matters as much as the colour.

Get it wrong and even the most beautiful pole will bow in the middle within a few months with heavier fabrics.

A quick guide worth saving:
19mm → lightweight curtains, voiles, sheers. Neat and understated.
28mm → the everyday workhorse. Works for most living rooms and bedrooms.
35mm or over→ heavy velvet, interlined, thermal or blackout curtains. If the fabric feels weighty in your hands, go here.

Tip for heavy curtains:
1. Weight them before choosing the pole.
2. Filter out by diameter. For extra heavy curtains of up to 25kg go for 50mm or 55 mm in diameter.

A few small slip ups can spoil even the best curtain track. Here's what to watch for:

❌ Going on size alone. Check the weight capacity, not just the length.
❌ Fixing in the wrong spot. Screws into weak wall will work loose over time. Also, use metal detector to make sure there are no wires in the wall.
❌ Skipping maintenance. Dusty gliders make curtains stick. A quick clean with a dry cloth every few months keeps them gliding.
❌ Forgetting fabric weight. Lining and fullness add up, so factor them in before you buy.

Just a little forethought, and your curtains will glide smoothly for years.

Ever wondered why hotel curtains always glide so beautifully? That's a corded track.

A corded system lets you open and close your curtains using a pulley cord, so your hands never touch the fabric. Instead of wrestling with your curtains from a step stool, one gentle pull does the whole job.

The trade off is a few extra moving parts and the cord itself, so if you have little ones or pets at home, that is worth thinking about (more on that soon).

Corded or uncorded tracks? It is a question we get asked a lot, and the honest answer is: it depends on you.

Corded tracks use a little pulley system, so you never need to touch the fabric to open or close your curtains. Uncorded tracks are simpler, you just pull the curtain by hand.

Neither is "better." One suits busy households with tall windows and heavier curtains. The other suits homes with young children, or anyone who likes things simple and low maintenance.
