Timber tilt and turn windows explained. Our design team has written a plain guide to the window most of Europe takes for granted.

One handle does everything. Down, the sash is locked at multiple points around the frame. Horizontal, it swings inwards like a door so both faces of the glass can be cleaned from inside the room. Up, it tilts inwards at the top for ventilation while the bottom stays shut.

The guide covers:

• How the perimeter gear works and why the window seals so well when closed
• Why the tilt position is the one most owners use, and what it does for ventilation
• Cleaning from inside, which matters most on upper floors

Crittall style internal doors: steel or timber? Our design team has written a guide to both, using two of our own projects to show the difference.

Steel means our Ferro Porte range. Timber means a bespoke door made to carry the same slim glazed grid.

Timber sliding doors: a specifier's guide from our design team.

A sliding door is a different piece of engineering from a hinged one. The leaves are heavier, the seals work differently, the hardware carries the load every day, and the structure above the opening has to be designed around it.

The guide walks through:

• The four types, standard slider, lift and slide, sliding folding and pocket slider, and the trade-off between view when closed and opening when open
• Why weight is the governing problem, and why head deflection is planned before manufacture
• The three threshold options, rebated, flush and low profile, and when a flush threshold really works

Aluminium clad timber windows: what the phrase actually means, and when they are worth it.

Our design team has written a straightforward guide for anyone weighing them up. Inside, a timber frame and sash. Outside, a designed aluminium profile that takes the weather. Between the two, a drainage path so moisture can escape rather than sit against the timber.

The guide covers:

• The difference between aluminium clad timber and timber clad aluminium, and why you should check which one a supplier means
• How the two layers are joined so they can move independently
• Why "maintenance free" is an overstatement, and what still needs attention
• Where the system earns its cost, and where plain timber or aluminium may serve better
• The questions to ask about profiles, corners, cills, timber specification and hardware

Design tip: match the treads to the floor, and order them together.

The detail that makes a bespoke staircase look as if it grew out of the house is a simple one. The treads and the floor they land on should read as a single material.

Three recent projects, three ways of doing it:

• Crouch Hill: 100mm quarter sawn oak treads, with the engineered wood flooring ordered at the same time and colour matched to them
• Weybridge: 40mm oak treads stained to match the Flush Plana internal doors
• Guildford, pictured: 40mm oak treads on a Wayfarer staircase, colour matched to the owner's flooring

The lesson is timing. Specify the staircase early and our design team can sample your flooring or door finish and match the treads to it, rather than chasing the colour once the floor is down.

Aluminium clad timber windows and doors for a three-storey new build in Guildford, Surrey.

The brief put natural light first, so the glazing had to work hard. We supplied the full package in our Aluminium Clad Timber Casement 78 system, every frame finished in RAL 7016 inside and out:

• Bespoke windows, including large triangular gable windows
• An external sliding door
• Double-height fixed screens around the stairwell and galleried landing, direct glazed into Casement 78 frames

Our Wayfarer staircase winds in two flights around those glazed landings. Black steel strings colour finished to RAL 7016, 40mm oak treads with a stepped nose matched to the owner's flooring, glass balustrades on hidden fixings and round oak handrails.

Designo Grooved G102 internal doors in light grey, with stainless steel handles, finish the scheme.

How to choose external doors. Three materials, three different answers, and the right one depends on how you live with them.

Timber doors: three-layer engineered wood beam, 60mm or 78mm casement profiles, Euro 78mm or 94mm sliding profiles, finished in natural wood, oil or factory paint. Warm to look at and to live with.

Aluminium clad timber doors: the same timber inside, finished to match your internal joinery, with an aluminium skin outside in the full RAL range. No painting, no staining, just an occasional clean.

Aluminium doors: the slimmest frames. From the ultra-slim SlimLine 38 to CP 130 lift-and-slide and CF 77 bi-fold, with triple glazing on several systems.

Across all three:

• Double or triple glazing
• Internally beaded construction with espagnolette locking as standard
• PAS 24 or Secured by Design security on the relevant systems
• Made to your exact sizes

A three-flight staircase design is a different kind of project. In Golders Green, our Cadet Curved staircase climbs through two curved flights, then a third flight suspended from the ceiling finishes the rise across an open landing.

The curved flights wrap a venetian plastered shaft, with LEDs projecting onto the wall as you climb.

The details:

• Closed strings from the sides, finished in white
• Oak treads colour-matched to the client's flooring, closed oak risers
• Black anti-slip steel inlays on the leading edge of every tread
• Bespoke black steel railings, round oak handrails

The doors followed the same brief: Designo Grooved G100 curved door sets and Designo Inlaid IN103 sets in walnut with a 20% gloss lacquer, plus Ferro Porte M104-6 steel and glass doors on a pivot and slide system and a single M101 pivot door.

Timber sliding sash windows look the way they did three hundred years ago. The engineering inside them does not.

Our new Insights article explains how a sash window is held in position and which system suits which building:

• Cords and weights, with a counterweight hidden in a box at the side of the frame, often expected on listed buildings and in conservation areas, and repairable indefinitely
• Spiral balances, a spring-loaded rod in each channel, for a slimmer frame on new build
• Spring balances in a concealed cavity, a middle route between the two

It also covers what has quietly improved: brush and compression seals against draughts, slim profile double glazed units that keep the original sightlines, engineered timber for stability, and a sprayed factory finish that outlasts site painting.

Timber remains the most repairable window type. A cord, a sash or a bead can be replaced on its own rather than the whole unit.

A cantilever staircase in Epping, Essex, with a door package designed to match.

The treads are oak, 100mm deep and finished in black, with LED lighting beneath each one so the stair appears to float. The bottom tread is extended and sits on a shadow gap, a quarter landing turns the flight, and a 12mm glass balustrade is fixed to the side of each tread with stainless steel bolts beneath a square 40mm black oak handrail.

The internal doors carry the same detailing:

• Inlaid IN103 door sets in brown ash, painted cream with a 10% gloss clear lacquer
• A CNC-cut rectangular groove in each leaf with a black matt steel profile inlay
• Concealed hinges, seals, locks and latches colour matched in black
• LH103 curved handles and a black shadow gap frame system
