Another excellently detailed and researched article from Kate Burt This is Rubbish

Her articles are such a fantastic resource. Please subscribe to them.

I’m so grateful she talks about the project where a team of designers took residence at a household waste recycling centre - examining why sofas were not getting reused and bringing those finding together in a report for the furniture-making industry, waste managers, policymakers and local authorities - ‘Future Scenarios for Furniture’ key recommendations to close the loop on bulky waste.

Kate includes the link to film on the project made by - please watch it! 📺

My own recent experience of having an older high quality sofa recovered had been much more enjoyable to participate in than going to a showroom - or worse still ordering online. I got to have input on the detail, find the fabric, work with a talented team of craftspeople ✨💕

Loving your work. Many thanks for mentioning my book Kate!

I just want to say THANK YOU to the DOERS

👉 To those who consistently put on events to raise awareness and then back them up with actions.
👉 Those who speak at them,
👉 and come to listen
…..even on a Sunday night when I’m sure they have other things to do to learn about community energy (and that’s not just individuals looking for solar for their own use)

Thank you for your ACTION for as long as I can remember. Non-political, getting on with informing and supporting us

I’m proud to have been in this community for my whole life and have seen so much community work happening.
From parents supporting each other (WAM), my school raising money for a playground and helping to make a historical landfill site a place for humans and biodiversity to thrive (Fairlight School + ) Whizz Kids club, St Gabriel’s, Age Concern / and the absolutely brilliant

Screenings are happening nationally. The map is in our bio link.

Perhaps you have a venue and can organise one?

Invite your friends, MP and other local decision makers.

This documentary brings together the science and national implications in one compelling film.

are calling on the UK Government to stage a prime-time, multi-channel televised national emergency briefing to the nation, launching a major public engagement plan to communicate the scale and immediacy of the risks we face, combat rising disinformation - an essential step in building support for the wartime-scale response now needed.

It was very special to visit Charleston farmhouse again after a mere 38 years since visiting with art college! We were lucky then to go then as it was quite soon after they started opening to the public.

So many story strands to follow from this house - but today I really enjoyed the creativity and inventiveness of adornment, using what they had and adding beauty with every stroke of the brush or stitch of the needle.

Visits are well spaces out and the custodians make it really interesting passing on all the information, rather than labels everywhere or listening to an audio tour. You very quickly feel comfortable and in someone’s welcoming home. The gardens are filled with flowers chosen to paint in still lifes.

Much recommended!

Reminding my fellow designers of the deadly potential of the quartz worktops we may specify.

We need to protect both installers and those in the manufacturing supply chain. If corners are cut and safety guidelines aren’t followed, dry cutting this material creates dust which exposes to silicosis.

There’s 55 recorded cases in the UK since 2023 and it’s been recognised as a huge problem in Australia where it’s now banned.

In the UK, Baroness Natalie Bennett has been campaigning actively to ban importation of these engineered stone worktops along with other measures to protect those handling the manufacture and installation of these materials.

Also the British Institute of Interior Design published this guidance in 2024

Please read and reshare.

Please also watch this 14 min recent interview of journalist of by summarising the issues and progress in his incredible research for the last few years on this issue.

It’s brilliant to see this important journalism is recognised as part of Private Eye’s Paul Foot Award 2026 shortlist series.
