Bougainvillea – A Splash of Colour ☀️🌺
One of the things I love about going on holiday is discovering the plants that define a place, and it’s impossible not to stop and admire the breathtaking bougainvillea.
Did you know that those vibrant pink, purple, orange or white “flowers” aren’t actually flowers at all? They’re papery bracts – specialised leaves that surround the tiny white flowers hidden in the centre. Those colourful bracts are what make bougainvillea so eye-catching.
Native to South America, bougainvilleas thrive in hot, sunny climates and are wonderfully drought-tolerant once established. They happily scramble over walls, pergolas and buildings, creating spectacular cascades of colour that seem to glow in the sunshine.
As a florist, I can’t help but admire the way nature creates such drama with something so simple. Bougainvillea reminds me that sometimes it’s the supporting elements that make the biggest impact – a lovely little lesson in floral design too!
