Is your radiator cold at the top but warm at the bottom?

As the temperatures begin to drop and our heating systems are switched back on, it's a good time to check that your radiators are working efficiently.

If you've noticed that a radiator isn't heating evenly, trapped air could be the cause.
Over time, air can collect at the top of a radiator, preventing hot water from circulating properly and reducing its efficiency.

The good news? Bleeding your radiator is often a quick and simple way to resolve the problem.

Our Advice Centre has an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide covering everything you need to know.

Most finishes are designed to hide how a radiator was made. This one doesn't.

The Ancona Tinted Lacquer is hand-burnished and then sealed under a gloss lacquer, which leaves the weld lines and sanding marks from production on show. The position and number of those marks is different every time, so no two radiators are alike.

The tint is what makes it versatile. A Brass or Copper tint in the lacquer warms up the raw steel, creating a softer take on the industrial look that works beautifully across a range of interior styles.

Two tints, hand-finished, with a 10 year guarantee. Worth seeing in person, since the character is in the detail.

Autumn colours don't have to stop at the soft furnishings.

As the light drops and we start leaning towards warmer tones at home, copper is one of those finishes that quietly does a lot of work. It picks up the warmth in wood, brick and brass, and shifts with the light through the day rather than sitting flat on the wall.

It's one of six feature finishes available on our Ancona Column Radiators, alongside Pearl Bronze, Aged Brass, Satin Gold, Vintage Green and Textured Anthracite.

If you're weighing up a warmer finish for an autumn project, it's always worth seeing it in person before you decide. Our showrooms are a good place to start.

Sometimes the simplest ideas make the biggest difference.

A shelf above a radiator won't work miracles on heat output, but it can help direct some of the rising warm air into the room rather than letting it travel straight up the wall. It also gives you an extra surface for styling - a lamp, a few books or whatever else needs a home.

The detail that matters is the gap between shelf and radiator. As our national sales manager Richard Lister points out, 'the key is to maintain good airflow around the radiator, as positioning a shelf too close can restrict the natural circulation of warm air'.

It's exactly the thinking behind our new Ancona console table, which gives you that extra surface without compromising the airflow.

Lovely to see it featured in House Beautiful UK this week!

Who says a bedroom radiator has to fade into the wall?
Choosing a radiator in a colour that complements the rest of the room can turn something practical into part of the overall design.

Here, the olive green finish of the Sitar Tube Radiator allows it to sit comfortably alongside the tones used throughout the bedroom, from the walls to the bedding, so the radiator feels considered rather than something to work around.

Who says a kitchen radiator has to blend in?
Choosing a radiator in a colour that complements your cabinetry can turn something practical into part of the overall design.
Here, the rich terracotta tone works beautifully alongside the painted kitchen island, while aged brass valves add the perfect finishing touch.
And that’s the beauty of choosing colour. Your radiator doesn’t have to disappear into the background, it can become a considered part of the room.
Would you match your radiator to your kitchen cabinetry, or choose a contrasting colour? 👇

2, 3 or 4 columns? There's a bit more to it than looks.

The number of columns affects how deep your radiator sits from the wall, and it plays a part in how much heat it gives out too. More columns can mean more warmth from the same height and width, which is really useful if wall space is tight.

That said, it's not quite as simple as "more columns, more heat". A larger 2 column can actually give out more warmth than a smaller 4 column, so it's worth thinking about what your room needs rather than going by columns alone.

We've put together a guide that walks through:

The difference between 2, 3 and 4 columns
Finding the right size for your room
Where column radiators work particularly well
Things to bear in mind for period homes and heat pumps

An old radiator isn't automatically a radiator that needs replacing.
Most radiators fitted in UK homes give around 10 to 15 years of reliable service, and plenty go on far longer when the heating system is looked after. What matters is the condition, not the number.
So what's worth checking?
🔸 Rust or flaking paint around the bottom edge
🔸 A leak coming from the radiator body, rather than a valve or connection
🔸 Cold spots that bleeding or a system flush won't shift
🔸 Whether the problem is one radiator or several
A quick way to read the cold spots:
Cold at the top usually just needs bleeding
Cold at the bottom often points to sludge in the system
Both are very different fixes to replacing the radiator.
And if it's several radiators playing up, the cause is usually the system, not the radiators.
We've put the full checklist together in the Advice Centre, including when repair makes more sense and what to think about if you're switching to a heat pump.

There is a particular quality to the warmth of cast iron.

It takes its time to come up to temperature, and it gives that warmth back slowly, long after the heating has switched off for the night, making it a great choice for bedrooms and period interiors.

The Henley is our most ornate cast iron design, with the detail cast into each 81mm section rather than applied to it. Three heights, built to the width your room asks for, and finished in any one of over two hundred colours. 'We can also match genuine Farrow & Ball® or Little Greene® paint colours, allowing the radiator to complement your walls and sit beautifully within your interior scheme.

Made in the traditional way, guaranteed for ten years, and delivered free across mainland Britain.
