In the 18th and 19th century the South Yorkshire area was an important centre for the production of fine quality pottery. World famous 'Rockingham' china was produced at Swinton on the Earl Fitzwilliam's Wentworth estate close to Elsecar. Rotherham and Doncaster museums have extensive displays and information on the history of local ceramic production. A visit to our shop in the Elsecar Antique Centre will give you the opportunity to purchase a genuine antique piece of local history.

How many Rockingham collectors started off buying the inexpensive cups, saucers and trios??
For me a trip to Doncaster or Rotherham antique fairs( to see Jean πŸ€—) or a day out calling at antique shops and centres could have me coming home with these lovely bits.πŸ˜€.
Still a great way to start a collection with beautiful antique pottery for a few pounds.
Here's an unusual colour c+s painted with 'flowers by girls'.

Here's an interesting if rather younger than usual piece.πŸ€”

'The Leeds Pottery Project' 1983 to 1987. was a Leeds council funded initiative making pottery near the old works from original moulds rescued in the city museum.
Set up to train and employ handicapped workers on a small scale.
It ran out of funds and was sold on to Royal Doulton.☹️
Renamed "Leedsware" and moved to Staffordshire it then became the mass produced product we all know.
This rather well made creamware basket is from the original 'Made in Leeds" reincarnation. It has an unglazed smooth base with a distinctive impressed mark.
Another item in my Elsecar Antiques Centre unit.πŸ™‚πŸ˜ŽR.

Lincoln resident on this one.
The theory that they moved around the canal network seems to be holding up.πŸ™‚

Hi Folks.πŸ‘‹.
Two of these rather nice Bumantofts vases have just popped up on 'Fleabay.πŸ™‚.
One is especially interesting as it also has the Fireclay Co impressed mark.
The price is "all the money" as you can see..... especially as they come with small manufacturers? faults.
They are from a reputable ceramics seller by the looks of his other items.
"London" prices as they used to say but does anyone on here know what they usually fetch??
They are lovely so I thought you may like a look....πŸ€“R.
Like and share would be goodπŸ‘

This Bishop and Stonier porcelain jug was undoubtedly dip finished in Mexborough.... and with some fine gilding added as well.πŸ‘.
It just has the SB&S anchor mark printed to the base WITHOUT the over stamped Baguley mark.....but I think the local attribution is pretty safe.😁.
There's a customer of mine at Elsecar Antiques Centre I think will want this.πŸ€”.

Look at this little fella.πŸ˜€. A tiny prattware dog on a cushion has all the character of the larger Yorkshire models.😍.
I still don't know where these pieces with the alternate sponged base were made.
It's just "The large impressed crown factory" in my book.
Anything been discovered about the origins lately ??

A pair of very good cabinet plates just sold at auction.πŸ˜€.
Attributed to George Speight.
The painted view on one shows a romantic image of Wentworth Woodhouse in the distance πŸ”πŸ˜³ and with what appears to be a formal garden to the front and the other the Doric Temple in the park.😲.
Sorry about the quality of the pics but they are from the auctioneers internet listing.πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«
Good eh....(Remember the hammer price is PLUS 25% commission.πŸ˜’πŸ‘πŸ˜ŽR.
