This beautiful old tenement had all the bones of a wonderful family home, but after years as student accommodation, much of its character had been lost.
Broken cornicing. Missing ceiling roses. Fire doors. Tired flooring. Poor lighting. White walls and spaces that simply weren’t working for the people who now lived there.
The brief was to transform it into a sophisticated, warm and highly functional family home for two sisters and their children - somewhere that felt beautiful, personal and relaxed, but also worked effortlessly for everyday life.
The design began with the way they actually wanted to live.
Working with our favourite team , we rethought the spatial planning to create spaces for homework, relaxing, entertaining and spending time together. We restored and reinstated architectural details, introduced considered lighting and layered natural materials, antiques and contemporary pieces.
Small, overlooked spaces were made to work harder - cupboards became ensuites, compact areas became generous laundry and storage spaces, and every possible inch was considered, floor to ceiling.
The sisters each brought their own tastes and personalities to the project, alongside the needs of their children. The challenge was to bring all of that together into one cohesive home that felt unmistakably theirs.
And perhaps the best part of the transformation is the feeling you get when you walk through the door. Warm. Calm. Comfortable. Layered. Home.
A home that works hard for a busy family, without ever feeling like it. This was such a special project, and the trust our clients placed in the process made it all the more rewarding.
