HAPPY READING FOLKS 🤩

BEGINNER U.K. YARNWORK PROJECT JUST GOT TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL! OMG right here are my notes. 100% U.K. wool! Real wool from Flock and Skein!

* New yarn added!! Dragonfly colourway Shetland/Bluefaced Leicester it is THE ULTIMATE for softness. Absolutely skin wearable
* I can knit! Very few mistakes and still 110 loops/stitches per row. Once I learn how to correct mistakes my knitting will be good enough to make an item of clothing. I would choose the green again to make a V-neck jumper and wear a shirt with tie or stock and nice jewellery with it. It would look amazing I think! The other colours I wouldn’t wear. They are not my colourway for the wearing but my goodness they are my colourway for my artists eye!
* I think beginner knitters should choose an achievable project. Something simple but WOW, like this! This is just power colourways and a lot of Stockinette stitch putting the mileage into my motor and cognitive skills. I wouldn’t like to make clothing that I wouldn’t potentially wear because let’s face it, things can and will go wrong. Artwork with yarn is so much more achievable and it’s awesome!
* This project is my absolute finish to the different breed product trials! Talk about test knitting!
* I cannot believe how far 100g of 4-ply goes
* Doing things without a plan can go better than if planned! This is just mega now!
* So I started with one skein because I liked the colour. As I knitted the 110 stitches in Stockinette stitch aiming to surface crochet a black cat popping out the theme soon turned into pagan spirit animals! Now I have 4 skeins and the potential to purchase one more colourway to make 5 spirit animals surrounding a pagan symbol in the centre! Omg it’s going to be terrific.
* The frames are going to be antique looking possibly with gold leaf and writing etched or in black and I’m no longer going to crochet a border because I want the spirit animals to really pop out of the knitting
* It’s all about taking opportunity as the ideas present themselves. Now I understand how the whole wool mill came about going from needle felting an animal to processing over 100 TONNES of wool per year!
* I’m going to finish the green square before starting the other skeins just to double check dimensions. Do I do all the same size to the 100g 4ply all 110 stitches or do I make slightly different sizes? That’s the next bridge to cross because once you make those loops on the needle your knitting is set and you don’t want to be having to take it out.
* I think I’m getting very good value here! The materials will cost around £110. Look at the hours that first £20 skein has given me and the educational value! I also know the time and work that goes in to take wool through about 6 processing stages. This is why I think yarn prices should go up.
*U.K. wool needs to leave the acrylic copycat cuckoo nest stuff exactly where it’s at because the story, ethos, quality, feel and health just blows any other product apart. There is NOTHING that can compare to this yarn. It’s soft, it’s strong and it’s really easy to work with because it’s not slippery. Its story runs deep and nothing can compare to its brand.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this read and that it has inspired you to think of what you would like to make on your own journey with U.K. wool yarnwork. Please share your thoughts/stories in the comments

SPINNING POINTERS FROM A BEGINNER

Haven’t touched a spinning wheel since year one of working with wool. I was on dog combs back then but I’ve realised more in the last 5 minutes and fixed pretty much every issue I had with this wheel 5 years ago 🤣. I’m still a beginner but I have this ability to pick stuff up and learn really quickly.

Anyway it’s Jacob in the DK sort of weight because since working from the top down doing knitting recently I’ve taken to the beautiful stitches that 4-ply and DK can create in Stockinette Stitch.

I like creating a 2ply yarn from carded batts and plying is up properly in a woollen spun style.

I just find it’s nice and neat but not too smooth so it allows for some fluffiness 😍❤️🇬🇧🐑 I don’t like working anything apart from Viking rugs which have to be made in the grease

This is all beginner stuff! 5 years ago I joined a spinners guild. A lovely lady called Jane sold me this wheel and gave me a couple of lessons to get started. What I love is even if your yarn goes inconsistent you can still work with it and create something special. Right now in my personal work I’m loving really neat yarn though so I think this time round I’ll be a bit harder on myself 😝

You are never too busy for your own personal time and I don’t have a project in this area. What I do have though is ten minutes to see things from the eyes and feel of a spinner to review my knowledge and all the little information points which come with it. If your wheel is away in a cupboard somewhere go and give it a little spin, it’s so relaxing. Also if you are beginner just have no fear. Review and build on your pointers. If your yarn snaps take some tension off and get the fluff reattached!
